Don't Use That Tone With Me

Today, when class began, everyone received a book titled, Ready Player One, a novel by Ernest Cline. The novel is divided up into levels and sections within those levels, level one is due Monday October 22. Everyone is required to answer two questions, the first being; what tone does the novel develop about the past? and the second; what does the tone of the novel develop about the future? It is important to be specific in these passages in order to support the answer you give, don't forget to add page numbers to support evidence.

In order to answer these questions we must figure out what tone is. Tone refers to the speakers attitude in what he or she writes or gives into a film. For example: an audience can be either casual or formal, context can be either be sincere or ironic, and attitude can be either negative or positive depending on the situation. Connotation and denotation play a big role in tone. Connotation is more emotional and social, while denotation looks at dictionary definitions.

On Google Classroom the class was given definitions that had to due with tone and whether they were positive or negative connotation. We looked at two examples in class.
The first example had to due with connotation
Do these sentences say the same thing?
This freshman is a jock
This student plays sports
This scholar is a competitor

While the sentences all mean the same thing, the connotation is completely different. The first sentences gives out a negative connotation vibe. Calling one a freshman is an insult, and jock and not a very professional word to use. In the second sentence it is noticed that it's not negative, but it's also not positive, in fact it is a very neutral connotation, calling someone a student is just average not insulting or complimenting same goes along with saying he playing sports . Last but not least the third example is very positive. Calling one a scholar is very complimenting and saying he is a competitor means he is dedicated to playing sports.

Coin toss scene from No Country For Old Men (despite the technical difficulties):
In this scene it is described as having a harsh tone. In fact the class agreed that the tone was tense ominous, apathetic, and tense. All of these words have one thing in common, they're negative connotation. ominous meaning portending evil, apathetic with translates to showing no emotion, and tense or ridged in other words.

We as human beings use positive and negative connotation and tone in everyday life. For example, some of us may be more negative than others, how each of us portray how we see things, or your tone might be different among friends as oppose to your boss or parents. So watch your tone.
