Friday in class we mostly just worked on our senior papers. Mr. Rivers wanted us to focus on planning out our senior paper and how we were going to tackle it. I focused on doing more research on my topic of AI piloted military drones. My 2 articles I had for my literature review were mostly about current drones(the type that don't use AI). As I continued my research I found out that there is a debate on weather or not AI powered drones should be allowed in war or if there should be a preemptive ban on them. The main concern is the lack of human control leading to the machines not correctly distinguishing between civilians and combatants. This could lead to much more civilian deaths but there is an opposition however this blog will not cover this. However I found that my films do not cover this debate so I needed to discard the articles due to the lack of evidence I can get from my film. I also found another article that actually tales exclusively about the impact and prospects of AI powered drones. This article is much more useful to me because it has much more evidence that my film can build off of.
This is an important lesson that many professional journalists need to keep in mind. They all have an article they want to write and when they are conducting in-depth research then need to focus on their article's topic and not get side tracked like I did with the debate articles. If they get distracted they will lose time and possibly the article if they don't get it out in a timely fashion. Therefore you need to make sure you keep your research delivery to your topic.
