Ready for the Future (CAUTION - SPOILERS FOR READY PLAYER ONE)

The OASIS, a virtual reality introduced in the book and movie Ready Player One written by Ernest Cline may be one of the most intriguing concepts ever created. The movie was just released this year and was directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie and book both introduce the story by explaining how the earth has suffered an energy crisis, ran out of fossil fuels, and overpopulation. To escape this reality James Halliday has created a virtual reality that is free and everyone can use to escape their actual reality. At the beginning of the book, we find out that Jame's Halliday has died and in the OASIS he has created easter eggs that once found will give the user trillions of dollars and full control over the OASIS. Throughout the film, I noticed loads of differences from the book.

The first thing that I noticed was different was the fact that the very first challenge was not a maze with booby traps. In the book, Parzival (our main character) found a replica of an old video game built into the OASIS and it was life size. He had to go through the maze as if he was the actual game's character. At the end of the maze, he would have to battle a giant monster but instead of fight, they played an arcade game against each other. This is different from the movie because in the movie everyone in the OASIS knows where the first key is. They have to race and just make it to the finish line. No one was able to do it for years until Parzival was able to crack the code. He figured out that instead of going and following the course he should just go backward really fast. Doing so brought him to this secret track beneath the actual course and brought him safely to the finish line. This was such a surprise for me because I was expecting the movie to follow the book a decent amount. This wasn't the only key that was different from the book. Every single key/ challenge was different.

Another area that split from the book was the fact that Parzival met Art3mis before the end of the story. After only the first key the two characters crossed paths in real life. I feel that this kind of took away from the story because in the book it was this romance that was mysterious and interesting because they had no idea what the other looked like and all they knew were their personalities. I feel that this took away from the suspense of what would happen to them in the future. This wasn't the only change with Art3mis. She was also taken by IOI in real life and brought in as a prisoner that had to work for them in the OASIS. This is different from the book because instead of Art3mis being taken as a prisoner in real life it was Parzival and instead of being helped by everyone who teamed up it was just Parzival who escaped by himself.

Even though they both had their differences I loved both the book and the movie. They were very exciting and made your heart race. Even though I already knew the story the movie was still very exciting because of the changes that they made. The changes made it so that it felt like a new story.
10/10 would recommend this to a friend.
