The Mystery of Murder

The Mystery of Murder

Taylor Sheridan, a very strong screenwriter and a stronger director. The opening scene of the film Wind River, shows Natalie Hanson (Kelsey Chow), barely dressed and running barefoot through the quiet hills of wyoming. While running through this snowy tundra, the audience is exposed to the audio of Natalie reading a type of farewell/love letter. As the movie goes on our main character Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner), finds Natalie raped and dead in the wilderness. This kicks off a full investigation with Cory leading rookie FBI agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) closer to Natalie's killer.

Taylor Sheridan did a great job by inching towards the killer. He did a great job pacing the movie, while throwing in plot twists. Sheridan made a very unorthodox choice by making the murder not seem very important. This choice made the setting seem very realistic. The setting is located in the an indian reserve in wyoming. A lot of these reserves get little attention and have small enforcement units. All of these choices allow for that realistic feeling of a indian reserve.

The audience also get a look in on the grief of Hanson’s family and Lamberts past. Sheridan shows us a brief scene of the mothers gruesome grief and request of the father. Lambert works for the wildlife program as a hunter. Hanson’s father asks Lambert to find his daughter killer dead. The only way he can get over this grief is an eye for an eye. This triggers Lamberts path to revenge to comes out.

The audience is shown Lamberts past and we see that he also had a daughter who passed the same way as Natalie. Lamberts past ignites and causes him to go on a path of revenge. Sheridan does a good job at making this suddle, while being very clear. This revenge is not explicitly said out right, but it is shown in his subtle actions.

As the movie comes to an end Sheridan makes another great choice of wrapping up the end. He throws us for a loop for the killer. After discovering the killer, the choice of throwing him in jail and letting the justice system take its course is not present. A different type of justice is prevailed. After catching the killer he is given the same chance Natalie had. He is forced to run through the snowy mountains with a lack of clothes.

Sheridan does a good job of showing the dangerous frontier of America, where everybody carries a gun and needs to take matters into your own hands. The audience gets a good sense of justice, while seeing a whole different part of America. Overall I would have to give this film a Good,Good.

Other movies with Jeremy Renner:
  1. The Hurt Locker (2008)
  2. The Arrival  (2016)
  3. The Avengers (2012)
4. Upcoming- Avenger: Infinity War (2018)
