Summer reading essay explanation

Date: 10/5/18

In class today Mr. Rivers explained to us the essay we were going to do based on our summer reading that we did. The essay is due on the 22 of October and is required to have at least 1000 words in it. He also showed us that the essay should be filled with facts to explain our point of view and review while also having flavor to keep people interested. As a class we read different people's past papers and talked about what we learned from reading it and what the people did well in writing it. I also discussed my book choice further with Mr. Rivers as the paper i read was based on the same book. We talked about whether we preferred the book or the movie and some of the difference between the two. I talked with him about how in the book Gandalf has a more important role where as in the movie he is barely there and just explains things for a couple minutes then leaves. That was my opinion and something I was going to put in my paper where as Mr. Rivers thought the exact opposite making it so we keep going back and forth.  Mr. Rivers then went on to talk to us about how we need to be careful and not use outside resources to make our paper since we are only supposed to use the book/movie to create it. He said that in the past people have been caught doing that and were punished for plagiarism which is something he would hope doesn't happen to us in the future. We are also supposed to integrate quotes into our paper and to use them to point to specific events in the book so the paper doesn't have a vague tone to it.

  1. Good details about the learning that happened in class on Friday. Please remember to post on time and to include an extension out into the real world. Use paragraphs to help you accomplish that task.
