When a Horror Becomes a Comedy

There are some really good horror movies. Ranging from the present times to the past times there have been many monumental titles that people will remember from all generations. The titles including, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Poltergeist, to the A Quiet Place, The Conjuring, and Bird Box. However, with those excellent titles being introduced, there are some really bad ones. One in particular, would be The Final Destination 4. In it's own respect, this film created by David Ellis, uses a lot of advanced CGI and some scene are nicely done. Overall however, the movie is an absolute mess. If you've never watched one of the Final Destination movies, they all start and end the same way. The 'main character' for example, has a future pretense as to how they are all gonna die during a tragic event. He/She lives through the horrible experience and then as soon as the main character dies, They go back in time to exactly a few seconds before the tragic event took place. Then for the length of the movie, it's the 'new' survivors are now being killed by an otherworldly/supernatural force and or the main character helps to stop said 'circle'. Now everyone gets to watch as the character struggle to survive from a magical 'death' being that is out for them all. This movie having a decent movie concept somehow turned a decent horror story-line to a completely gross comedy.
The actors in the movie are what make this movie insanely dumb to the point it's comedic. There are 9 survivors from the preordained accident that the main character saves them from. However, the number is immediately cut to eight as an unfortunate female is struck by a flying tire which completely emaciates her body. The reactions that come are completely bland and unrealistic, it's incongruous which makes people chuckle or either wince at the scene. Despite that, the actors all feel replaceable in that film to the point that most viewers don't really remember the names they're given in the movie. That's probably one of the main reasons why that the movie is so atrocious. There is not only no in depth characters, there is absolutely no character development except in the security guard George where we learn his back story and see him grow as a character. His death scene was so abrupt and annoying I wanted to stop watching the movie there. Also with many characters there's no emotional connection so when they die, there really isn't any companionship therefore it's almost laughable. A movie that displays great character development would be Bird Box. They learn of the causes as to why they're dying and we in a way develop a connection with certain characters so when one dies, we're disappointed and sad because we wanted them to get out of said crisis.
Despite the bad acting and bad story the film has great camera work. There were some really well shot scenes that made the movie bearable. For example, when the beginning scene was happening there was a wide camera angle and loose shot framing to show the full extent of the explosions and chaos happening in the opening scene. Also with the use of lighting key and screen density, it really emphasizes the gory, thrilling, and suspenseful moments that do happen in the film for example the last scene with the movie theatre blowing up because of an accidental gas leak that caused flammable tins to blow up. Overall the camera crew did a really great job filming the movie it looks really high budget despite the awful creation.
Overall, this movie was not enjoyable for me. It was too predictable, too over the top unrealistic, and there was just no connection to the characters. However, if you do want to see a Final Destination film I recommend either the 1st one or the 2nd one, those were done really well. The 4th one just felt lazy and rushed which lead to bad production. For me the movie definitely ranked as a Bad-Bad for the bad story, bad actors, and just overall wasn't scary at all. The only thing that really made me wince and look away a few scenes was the absolute overuse of CGI for the over the top gory deaths the characters suffered.
