Today in class we started off by going over the lesson we ended off with yesterday. This lesson involved Alfred Hitchcock and eyeline match. It involved Alfred Hitchcock because of him being world renowned movie director and him being around since you had to actually cut the movie film in order to cut and edit it. It involved the eyeline match because this is a certain type of movie clip that involved three steps, the three steps are: its a shot of the character’s face and the person looking and something, the shot of the thing (what the character is looking at), and then back to the character’s face to show his or her’s reaction. Then we went on to talk about editing choices and how there are three different types of editing choices. These editing choices include the narrative purpose, the thematic purpose, and the practical purpose. We discussed what we thought these all meant in our groups. My group thought that narrative purpose is what develops that actual story in the movie, we thought that thematic purpose developed the movie’s tone, and we thought practical purpose which is real life. We came out of the groups and discussed with the entire class and decided that practical purpose is meant to preserve continuity (making sure everything adds up), we decided that thematic purpose is the overall themes, tones, style, and genre, and that narrative purpose is the full story-plot/conflict and the character. We were then exposed to the glossary of cuts and the glossary of transitions, these are the all the different types of cuts and transitions. We were then watched a video by rocketjump film school and it went over all the cuts and transitions in great detail. This extends to the world because now you can learn to recognize the different cuts and transitions that the movie directors use. Also it helps teach you to work in groups to come up to one answer to a certain problem. You also learn how directors like Alfred Hitchcock make their decision in their movies.
