November 26th

Today at the beginning of class we looked at the narratives for marking period 2. These consisted of our narrative objective, thematic objective and our cinematic objective which are all 30 percent of the grade for our movies. They are on classroom and can encourage us to make good choices in the films we are making next week and to help make our stories effective. There should be 1 to 3 students per film. If you get stumped there is a passage from Neil Gaiman on classroom that can be helpful. He encourages writers to ask ¨what if´s¨ and to make a fun original story.

For the rest of class we worked on our worlds and their soundtracks. Those are due TOMORROW!! Level 3 of Ready Player One is due on December 2nd so get reading it´s long. You also need two specific themes from Level 3 when you walk into class.
Happy Thanks Giving and eat lots of turkey!

Today in class we went over the requirements for the Allusions - Planets and Soundtracks slides. The slides where you are required to post/share your planets and soundtracks can be found on classroom. Remember, it is due by this Wednesday. Make sure to find soundtracks that suit your personality and/or situation, just like Baby. For your planet, you can name it whatever you want, and you can put whatever you want on/in it. IT MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE!

For the people that did not search for a movie they have already seen and find for a review for it, they must copy/paste the review into a Google Doc. Next, they will have to Highlight sections where the movie review includes the 7 elements of a journalist review. You are able to work solo or in with one other person.

November 21 - Natalia Brownstein

Today in class we went over how to create a review for a movie. Below is a list of points to be made during our analysis. We will be able to choose our own movie individually and review it like a movie critic.

JOURNALISTIC
structure of a review

ALWAYS CONSIDER AUDIENCE

  1. Deliberately titling the article - How well the title relates to the movie
    1. Title is the first introduction to the tone/argument/purpose of your review
    2. Probably the LAST thing that you write. What do we learn from these exemplars?
    3. Make it so it doesn't give away the story but makes it so what they want to focus on in the movie
      1. I.e          'Fantastic Beasts' - J.K. Rowling's Magic on Old New York (the title shows that the movie is fiction and will be about beasts but not in a scary way, as a way of something magical and wonderful)
  2. Credit Relevant Artists - How credited the movie is
    1. WHO is important?
      1. Director? Actors? Screenwriters? Original authors?
    2. Credit EXPLICITLY - naming artists within your sentences/paragraphs
    3. Credit PARENTHETICALLY - did you mention a character - you don't want to spend the whole review on them (you don't want to get into every detail they did in the movie - just a short blurb of their role and significance)
  3. Provide necessary context - What kind of background is the movie talking about and the type of allusions they refer to
    1. What do we NEED to know about this film/its production?
      1. Can it turn into a series?
      2. Does it reflect a certain current event/trend in the real world?
    2. What is happening OUTSIDE the film (or as part of the films PRODUCTION)
  4. Summarize the plot
    1. AVOID SPOILERS
    2. Premise - the main basis/conflict for the film
      1. One sentence premise: you should be able to explain the main focus of the narrative in a single sentence that is both specific and clear
      2. I.e        'GET OUT' centers around Chris's metaphorical and literal horrors of meeting his girlfriend's white family
  5. Evaluate context
    1. BULK of your review is specific paragraphs
      1. Remember that this is not an academic essay PARAGRAPHS MAY BE SHORT
    2. SPECIFIC paragraphs about SPECIFIC cause and effect  relationships
  6. Evaluate meaning and theme
    1. Consider the test as a WHOLE
      1. What does it ASSERT? (what does it declare or believe in confidently)
    2. Zooming back out at the end or as a way to zoom in at the beginning
      1. At the end - distancing the person from what really happened at the end and telling the audience what the theme of the movie is
      2. Beginning - what the audience should be focusing  on in the topic
    3. You want to jump around the plot's spoilers
  7. Conclude
    1. BRIEF and SPECIFIC
      1. In 1-3 sentences, you should be able to answer "So what?"

Wednesday, November 6th Class

Today in our shortened class, we finished the rest of the film "Baby Driver". Before I begin to fill you in with what you might have missed, just a reminder that Level One of the book "Ready Player One" is to be read by Monday, when we return from our long weekend. While reading, keep a look out for allusions and assembly in the text. Now, onto "Baby Driver"!      Quick summary of the rest of the film that you might have missed: When we picked up, Baby was rescuing his deaf foster dad from home, after the robbers had broke in. Baby drops him off at a home since he can no longer care for him. He then goes to the diner to get Debbie, but the robber whose wife got killed is there, with a gun. He is angry with baby for letting his wife die. Baby gets his gun and shoots him, an him and Debbie steal a car to run away. But first, they go to Baby's boss to get his tapes. The boss helps them run away and get by the police. The robber Baby shot shows up driving  a cop car and is determined to kill Baby and Debbie. After a long chase scene around the parking garage, and making baby nearly deaf, the robber dies. Baby and Debbie finally hit the road, but are stopped by police. Baby turns himself in, and ends up being subject to 25 years in prison, even though many testified for his good character. At the end of the film, we also find out that his real name is Miles.      Don't forget!! You must complete the assignment for "Baby Driver" on Google Classroom by the end of the weekend. Choose 2 songs from the film that develop Baby as a character and 2 that develop an aspect of the film, such as theme or editing. If you are confused, here is an example of how the song "Easy", played at the end of the film, develops Baby's character. - This song played off his tape labelled "mom" shows why Baby's character is fascinated with music; his mom sang and therefore music was one of the few good parts of his childhood that he holds onto.

Tuesday, November 5th Class

Today we started off with a reminder that Ready Player One, Level One is due by this upcoming Monday and that we should start reading it soon if we haven't already. We should be able to have an in debt discussion as well as talk about examples of allusions and assembly that are in the first chapter. We were also reminded that we have a half day Wednesday are off Thursday and Friday, which gives us plenty of time to finish reading. After that we picked up watching Baby Driver for the rest of the class and didn't finish it but have made it to the final 30 minutes of the movie and will most likely finish the movie tomorrow and we shouldn't forgot that we have to chose two songs that develop Baby as a character and two songs that help add on to the story or scenes. These songs have to be diegetic audio (Songs that characters in the movie had listened to)
