9/27/17 from the perspective of Andreas Oleinyk

Hello Everyone,
Today in class we continued our analysis of the movie No Country for Old Men in which we would watch a part of the movie and look for elements of Mise-En-Scene. Each day we have to identify a new element of Mise-En-Scene within the film, for today's analysis I chose to identify an interesting shot angle in the film.  Eventually I found an interesting point in the film that I used as an interesting shot angle the scene where Llewellyn is frantically fleeing from the hotel in pursuit by an enraged Anton. In particular I chose the shot where  Llewellyn is jumping out of his hotel window and we get a brief/oblique image of Anton. I chose this shot because of the amount of tension it brings to the mood of the story.

On my own time I re-watched one of my favorite action movies The Matrix and to anyone who has seen the movie you know why I chose this film to relate to shot angle. The Matrix in my opinion was a film that broke new grounds when it came to the use of special affects and CGI. The one scene that I chose to analyze is when the action in the film is at its peak and our protagonist is staring down the barrel of a seemingly indestructible antagonist. By using a unique shot angle with a 360 degree rotation around the protagonist he manages to dodge all the bullets as they are being fired at him. This makes out protagonist stand out from all the other characters by doing the impossible establishing his importance in the story.

  1. Great post, Andreas! Good details that would be helpful for any and all students who missed class today, and a really logical break between our class and the extension beyond it. I especially love that you are talking about a SPECIFIC choice in the Matrix. That specificity means that your extension is practical and worthwhile. Might want to consider including the actual YouTube clip to extend it even FURTHER!
