Daily Blog #1

Today we continued discussing Objective vs Subjective film analysis. We made a chart on the board for each side, and used our notes from the last time. We defined the two things in our groups. We discussed the semantics of the statements, such as how Subjective and Objective are NOT true/false statements. We discussed the Sandwich Metaphor, and how it related to the Objective and Subjective in a way of “it has meat” (Objective) vs “It tasted good” (Subjective). We discussed how Objective claims need to be supported with evidence, something that can be proved. Subjective claims can hide under objective evidence, but they don't really apply to a True and False debate like with Objective. Example: Nicholas Cage stars in Adaptation (Objective) but his acting was terrible (Subjective). We also talked about how language and word choice can determine whether something is Objective or Subjective. We discussed some sentences that were either Subjective or Objective.
The sentences were:
1. Lucille Bluth reminds me too much of my own mother (Subjective)
2. Even though Black Mirror has Science Fiction elements, the mood is reminiscent of a horror film. (Objective)
3. I just don't think Larry the Cable Guy is funny. (Subjective)
4. Breaking Bad’s final episode perfectly ties up all of the previous conflicts. (Subjective)
5. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is my favorite movie. (Subjective)
6. PG-13 Movies make more money than G, PG, and R rated films combined. (Objective)
All of the personals such as “Me”, “I”, and “My” make it subjective, while anything without is objective. The mood bit in 2. got me a little, but mood is an objective feel, whether or not you react in the intended way, the mood is still the way it is. We found the parts of the object in the sentences, such as Lucille Bluth (Actress), Science Fiction Elements (genre), Conflicts,  Finance, Mood, Resolution, Setting, Title.
We asked which analysis is better, and it depends on the situation. For Objective, it is good for Film Theory, Critiques, Academic Research, and examining the craft. For Subjective analysis, you can discuss personal preference, independent viewing, and your personal Top 5.
This year, most of our grades are going to be based on Objective analysis, but we will have assignments based on Subjective analysis.

This way of studying subjective vs objective can be used to study things in real life in a way that helps us improve in our decisions. By judging something or someone objectively, we are able to make more base rational decisions about it or them, as opposed to judging something or someone personally, as one would with a subjective point of view. This can help us in our understanding of others, and can help us develop a more comprehensive list of what makes us happy or sad, and analyze how we view things personally, as opposed to viewing in a non-judgmental fashion.
