Senior Paper and Baby Driver Update

Today in class, we started by talking about our senior papers. Mr. Rivers clarified where the abstract goes for an APA formatted paper. The correct order is title page, abstract, literature review, and then synthesis. The abstract should be the last thing (besides the title) to be written for an APA paper and page breaks are optional between the abstract, literature review and synthesis. The abstract title “Abstract” should be centered in the page. The title should have a title page for APA format. For MLA formatted paper you should have your title (centered) and then the literature review can start on the same page below it with the title “Literature Review”. He also encouraged us to reach out for help before school during lunch or after school to ask question. He also talked about how evidence should be used all throughout the paper. A paragraph without evidence doesn’t belong in the synthesis. We talked about formatting graphs or tables in an APA paper. He said that the graph can take up as much space as appropriate because there is a word count as opposed to a page count. Be sure to correctly cite the graph or table however.

He then talked about how the choices we choose for baby driver should be specified to a scene so we can make a deliberate claim later on on how music is important in the film. In the film today, Doc picks up the check for his dinner and then tells him he has to keep working for him or he’ll kill everyone he loves sort of thing. We also meet Doc’s  nephew who provides comedic relief. Baby and Debora plan to head west and never look back so Baby can get out of driving. First Baby has to do one more job. The criminals have to go see “the butcher” to get weapons with Darling, Buddy, and Batts. They end up in a shootout and afterwards go to baby’s favorite diner when Debora is working. Bats almost shoots Debora Baby stops him. Baby slips her a note saying, “road trip 2am”. Doc leaves it all up to Baby to make the decision to still go on the heist or not following the shootout. Baby agrees to go through with it, but thanks to dramatic irony, we know he actually plans to ditch at 2am and hit the road with Debora.

To expand on what we are doing in class, I decided to look up other movies where music plays a vital role to the plot. While there are many to choose from, such as Hairspray, Straight Outta Compton, or West Side Story, I chose to analyze The Lion King. In this movie, music is introduced from the very beginning to show culture and life in the Savannah. Music is also used for characterization of characters like Scar, or Timon and Simba. It is also used to create the coming of age of Simba. Music is used in a similar manner in Baby Driver because it helps create characterization for characters like Baby and Debora.
