Daily Log Blog - 3/14/18

Today we started off class by reiterating the difference between Subjective and Objective. Subjective regards assumptions based more on feeling or opinions rather than fact. In other words, it focuses on the subject, and what they think and feel. On the other hand, Objective is based more on facts and concrete details, rather than opinion. Focuses solely on the Object rather than the subject. In general, when reviewing or analyzing something, it is better to focus on what is objective. Then, we continued our discussion on genre by watching the trailer for the Emoji Movie, and were tasked to determine whether it was a Comedy or an Tragedy. I determined that it was a Comedy based on the jokes and high spirits. We also discussed what the differences between Comedy and Tragedy were. Tragedies are often marked by a fall from grace. These stories usually end poorly. The definition of a Comedy, however, is more difficult to nail down. To give us an idea of what generally happens in comedies, we reviewed the endings of several different Shakespeare plays. These usually ended with a happy ending for most parties involved, as well as at least one wedding.
Learning what denotes tragedies and comedies will help me determine which category films I watch fall into. For examples, after learning about tragedies, I learned that one of my favorite movies, The Room, is most certainly a tragedy, in the vein of other Greek masterpieces from 2500 years ago. It involves a man at the top of the world, falling from grace and eventually reaching rock bottom. In the same way, many movies I have watched that I did not previously think about could be considered comedies. For example, Spider-Man: Homecoming, while being more of an action movie, contains jokes, high spirits, and what could be considered a marriage, and could thus be considered a Comedy.
