Invader Zim 2019: Enter the Florpawhatsit?

Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus’ animation has benefited by the new technology in animation allowing for much more movement, exaggeration and dynamic movements. Non Diegetic Audio is used extensively throughout the entire film to add to the intensity or comedy through much of the movie. Not to say Diegetic Audio is less important as machinery, alien gurgles, and chewing noises are used quite a lot to let the audience know the world that is being portrayed is very gross.  The color pallet is purposefully made to be as sickly and ill as possible. Faded greens, blues, purples, and reds dominate the screen in nearly every frame with varying quantities of each. One scene say with The Almighty Tallest will be mostly blue in the background to help the Tallest’s colors of green and red stand out. There is one exception to this rule however. Membrane as the most bombastic of the characters stands out in every way as he is the only character ever put around bright blues while his character color pallet is mostly white. Effectively making him the most unusual character in an unusual movie. However talking about Invader Zim inevitably gets anyone into talking about the title character Zim, and his arch nemesis Dib. The characters original sharp designs in the original cartoon have been traded to much more soft edges. This makes the characters much more traditionally adorable to look at and allows them to be more expressive.

Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus 2019 is an amazing sequel to the already amazing Invader Zim TV show. It mixes the dark comedy of the early 2000’s with the animation quality of Gravity Falls. Along with Rick and Morty’s love of fun made up Sci-Fi words. Johnan Vasques and his very talented crew made the great idea to keep the characters almost entirely the same as the cartoon. Adding to the idea Dib and Zim are timeless characters who could be enjoyed no matter the year. The animation is very smooth, and if I have to be honest, more appealing than the TV show. Through the entire movie you never feel like the team was lazy or just wanted it over with. To anyone who watched and enjoyed the original I can’t recommend it enough. To anyone who is new to Invader Zim, it is a little harder to get into as it pulls from relatively obscure parts of the show. This however does not stop any of the jokes from landing. I have a really hard time coming up with any complaints for this movie aside from one new character. Saying anything about this character would greatly spoil the movie but I will say he looks like a scientific Magikarp from Pokemon. A Magikarp with a particular favorite dessert.

  2. Lots of good details in this review, Will. Consider the ways in which you can assemble that information so it proceeds logically. P1, for example, opens with the animation style and then takes a pit stop in audio before coming back to color (which seems like it has far more in common with animation style). Much of the tone is very clear (positive/negative), but make sure you're avoiding some of that neutral language that summarizes but doesn't quite evaluate. Second paragraph has flashes of subjectivity, but it's still a bit focused on the object itself. Consider how you can put more of YOU into that paragraph. Love the title!
