The Joker was no Laughing Matter

I went to see  "Joker" this past weekend at AMC. The director of the film, Todd Phillips, created his own adaptation of the Joker and what he had to go through. One thing that really stood out throughout the film was the lighting. It was mostly low key lighting to expose that Arthur (The Joker) was depressed and that something was off with him. To add on to this, the use of non diegetic audio was utilized at one of the most key moments of the entire film. The song "Rock and Roll Part 2" played as Arthur (The Joker) was dancing down the stone steps. This displayed that he had now officially become "The Joker".

I thought the film was fantastic. Anyone who has not seen "Joker" must see it. Every second of the movie is worth watching. People that are against "Joker" are misunderstanding the film. It is not about the Joker being a psycho killer for no reason. It is about how the Joker struggled with mental illness and that society made him even worse than he was in the beginning of the film. I would give "Joker" a ... GOOD GOOD. I have one question for all of the people that didn't like "Joker": "Why so serious?"

  1. I like that you're using your own language and I must admit that I actually chuckled a bit at the final line. Great tie in to the Dark Knight's classic line! Would have liked to see this get a bit more specific-- awfully short for a two hour movie. Keep pushing that tonal flavor (positive/negative) in your writing-- that first observation is definitely in praise of the lighting choices, but it's a bit unclear whether the use of "Rock and Roll Part 2" is a good or bad thing. Second paragraph needs to be more more about YOU (the SUBJECT) instead of about everyone else/the film itself (the OBJECT). Keep pushing to put yourself out there in terms of your thoughts/feelings/connections/etc. Great title!
