10\13\17

Today in class we continued watching our new film, Wall-E. After picking up where we left off in class yesterday, in the movie, Wall-E is graced with a friend on the lonely planet, Earth that he is stuck on. Excited to have a new friend to talk to and spend time with, Wall-E shows the new robot, Eve, around the new world he has created out of junk. While not known to Wall-E, but to the viewer, Eve is on a mission to collect something from Earth, and once her mission is complete, she shuts down. When Eve finds what she was sent to Earth for, she does in fact shut down, leaving Wall-E alone once again, never really realizing how truly lonely he was in the first place. This, adds to the topic of ¨love cures all,¨ paired with a passionate, gentle tone, which can create an assertion such as; Despite the world being difficult and cruel, having something or someone to care about makes living worthwhile. After finally retrieving what she came to Earth for, Eve is sent back to her home planet in space, and Wall-E tags along, to get his friend back, and to see what other life is out there.

In other news, don´t forget to work on your Be Reel blog posts, seeing as you need TWO per marking period! Also, remember to pin up your Objective Quality / Subjective Enjoyment cards in class for the movies you chose for your Be Reel blog posts. (This is the Good-Good, Good-Bad, Bad-Bad board up in class by the door.) Lastly, keep working on your summer reading essay which is due Thursday, October 26th!

In relation to the minor topic of ¨Love cures all¨ that I found in Wall-E, the same assertion could be made about the movie Coraline. Coraline Jones is an eleven year old girl who, when neglected by her parents, finds a portal to a different world where everyone pays attention to her, and it appears as though they love her. Throughout the movie, it is shown that her real life is where she feels most depressed, and the new world is one she wishes she could live in forever, showing the theme of having someone to care about and having someone to care for you, can make a world of difference and make life better.

  1. Late, sure, but still good details about our class activities. I like the scholarly research guide for developing that academic language. Definitely a valuable resource here. Lots of other valuable information (re: our discussion in class on that day). Please don’t forget about the other half of the assignment in which you extend your learning beyond the walls of our classroom. How can you connect this analysis of coin flips or tone or contrast or synthesis to the world at large? The extension makes our learning more relevant!
