Today in class Mr. Rivers finished explaining our summer reading essay and explained synthesis to the class. Synthesis means a combination of ideas to create an ultimate theory at the end of the ideas presented. The "Seeds for Synthesis" Mr. Rivers wanted us to remember was: the thematic assertions (theme), scene vs scene/choice vs choice, and the specific narrative elements. Mr. Rivers then went on to ask the class what we thought was important to talk about in our essays. Many students said it was important to compare and contrast the movie to the book. When comparing and contrasting the novel and the movie it is important to talk about the change in dialogue from book to movie. Also it is important to identify what type of audience the author is trying to reach, and the audience the director is trying to reach and attract towards the film. Mr. Rivers also wanted us to explain or argue what made the change in the film better or worse. Also as well as what made the film less or more realistic from the movie. Mr. Rivers wanted us to give their opinion on if the film's ending was too obvious or if it ended with the right details from the novel.
