Hunter Roggero Daily Log Blog 20 February - Day Two of the Film "Dodge ball"

Daily Log Blog - February 20

The purpose of today's class period was to continue watching the film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. This was our second day viewing the film. Because today's class period was only dedicated to watching the film, I will provide a brief summary of what an absentee would have missed.
We started where we left off yesterday: The failed car wash fundraiser where the creepy old man was the only customer. From there, the protagonists go back to the Average Joe's Gym. It is then that they decide to join the dodgeball tournament. The film then cuts to Globogym where Goodman is talking to the lawyer about the acquisition of Average Joe's. Goodman conducts himself in a very smug manner and the lawyer is obviously repulsed. From there, the film cuts back to Average Joe's where the members are watching an instructional video on how to play dodgeball. Another cut is made that brings the audience to the dodgeball match the next day. At this match, Average Joe's Gym loses to a Girl Scout troop, however one of the girl scouts test positive for steroids and so Average Joe's Gym wins by disqualification. The team goes to a restaurant to celebrate, but the good mood is cut short when Goodman shows up with his newly assembled dodgeball team. He demonstrates their abilities, makes a mess on Joe's table and team, and leaves. This display catches the attention of an old man who we learn to be a retired professional dodgeball player. This man offers to coach the team and Joe accepts. They begin traning and through a montage we see the players getting better. The last scene we see is where the lawyer picks up a dodgeball and hurls it with a very impressive amount of force into the Goodman dummy.
We, in the assignment tied to this film, are required to analyze and document examples of different types of humor and chaos present in the beginning of the film. With regard to humor, there was a surplus of superiority theory in the section of film we watched today. This mostly consisted of humiliating blows from dodgeballs and even some wrenches. There was lots of chaos in the film today as well. The audience can see that Joe is in severe economic trouble and is on the edge of losing his Gym. We continue to see how, in general, the members of Average Joe's Gym are looked down upon.
Being able to analyze/interpret humor to a greater degree than we already can is a useful attribute. This is especially true for someone who is a professional comedian. They get paid to be funny, so if they can't understand comedy inside-and-out, they're out of luck.
