In the movie Semi-Pro, directed by Kent Alterman, Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon as an owner, player, and coach for the Flint Tropics basketball team. The Tropics are in a league which is a level below the NBA and there was a deal struck in the beginning of the season for their league. The top 4 teams make it to the NBA but they must also have at least 5,000 fans per game. The Tropics were known to be really bad especially since Jackie was bad at everything he did so they went out and recruited a former NBA player "Monix." Monix was by far Flint's best player and always expected more out of the team than what actually happened. He would eventually convince Jackie to allow himself to coach the team and the Tropics got better. As the plot progressed Jackie kept doing dumb things but Flint was getting better. As a matter of fact to try and get more fans for the NBA promotion Jackie had a halftime show in which he wrestled a grizzly bear. A GRIZZLY BEAR!!! Jackie was the clown of the league but he still was a firm believer his team was going to the NBA because under Monix's coaching the Tropics got considerably better. Flint did become good enough to get to the NBA but the NBA had already decided on the 4 teams it wanted and the Tropics were not one of them. Jackie Moon was absolutely bamboozled by this discovery but it motivated him for his final game against the NBA bound San Antonio Spurs. Jackie hyped it up so much and determined this would be the best thing to ever happen to Flint, Michigan. He was guaranteeing a win for his squad and the Tropics went in there and actually won the game but unfortunately, the NBA still didn't promote them. They had determined Jackie's antics were best left out of the NBA and the Tropics would cease to exist.
I would rate this film as a good-good movie because objectively, the plot is always taking twists and turns and as the audience you never know what could happen next. Also, subjectively, the movie was excellent because I thought this was one of the funniest comedy's ever. It's about basketball which is my favorite sport and Will Ferrell is tremendous in the movie. He is hilarious throughout the film and the story line is even excellent. It's your classic sports movie with the team being featured needing to grow and mature as people and still succeed in their sport but the comedy aspect makes everything they do seem so stupid. Also, the comedy aspect plays a major role in the conclusion because in every sports movie the featured team always comes out on top but in Semi-Pro the featured team fails and the movie has a sad but funny ending. Overall, this movie is one of the best comedy films to come out and one of Will Ferrell's best movies.
