Daily Log Blog 1/22/18

Today in class Mr.Rivers class we continued with editing. Mr.Rivers talked about how important editing in film is and how it is used in everyday TV shows and movies. We started off class with the Eye Line Match, which is 1. Character looking at something, 2. The Things the Character is looking at, and 3. The character reacting to the thing. Also in class we talked about the various Editing Choices by directors and the reason they are used. The three purposes of editing is,

Narrative purpose- Dialogue to string, cause and effect, story structure
Thematic purpose- Quality, tension and tone
practical purpose- cost, directors choices, post production, transitions- sense of clarity

After reviewing the three purposes of editing  we watched a video that explained the different types of editing that directors use and in all the films they were used in.

Glossary of cuts
cutting on action
cutaway
cross-cutting
Jump cuts
Match Cut

Glossary of Transitions
Fade in / out
Dissolve
Smash Cut
Iris
Wipes
Invisible cuts
L-Cuts

After watching the video that explained both the types of film cuts and transitions we watched a famous scene from the film psycho. This films scene in order to make had over 40 cuts in just 3 minutes of film. This all happened in a short period of time and all the editing was so hard hard to count how many cuts there were. To relate what we learned in class to the real world is how important editing is to film and directors. Now i know that directors could change and put different pieces of film together to make the best possible film. Directors do this to not waste a lot of money on actors and also to not film constantly especially if one of the actors messes up. That is what we learned in Mr.Rivers class today.
