- To start off the remarkable Monday afternoon Mr. Rivers reminded us of our Be Reel Blog. The 2nd Be Reel Blog is due Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. After we started with a warm up from what we learned on Friday. He refreshed our minds about the 3 step in an Eyeline Match. One being character looking at something, second thing they are looking at and lastly character reacting to thing. Next we continued through the lesson and learned more about editing choice and what are the purposes.Narrative purpose - Dialogue to string together → conversation, Continuity (cause & effect), PLOT → story structureThematic purpose - Quality (speed) → tension & tone, Music → genre / mood,Practical purpose - Costly, Director’s choices / reflection, Honing in skills → PERFECT, POST-PRODUCTION, Transition → sense of clarityWe watched examples of different types of transitions and cuts. We were directed to a link on google classroom and copy and paste the bullets into our notes.
Glossary of Cuts
- Cutting on action (cutting while there is movement on-screen)
- Cutaway (cutting to an insert shot and then back)
- Cross-cutting (back and forth between locations, ex: phone call)
- Jump cuts (disjointed edits in the same shot or action)
- Match cut (cut from one shot to a similar shot by either matching the action or composition)
Glossary of Transitions- Fade in/out (to/from black)
- Dissolve (blend shots)
- Smash cut (abrupt transition)
- Iris (old-fashioned; circle that opens and closes in camera)
- Wipes (screen wipes from one side to the other)
- Invisible cuts (impression of a single take)
- L-cut (audio transition)
- J-cut (audio of the next scene starts before you get to it)
Lastly as a group we had to count how many cuts and transitions we saw in the short clip from the movie Psycho.
