Class notes 3/19

Our IWBAT articulate how patterns and content develop genre conventions and analyze how theories of humor create comedy. We spoke out what STRUCTURALLY makes a comedy? CHAOS to COSMOS
Chaos- Lack of order, Complications, Confusion.
Cosmos- a sense of Unity, Harmony.  They make things comedy by beginning with chaos and ending with cosmos. We then discussed the theories of comedy,
Superiority Theory-  Laughing when bad things happen to other people to feel better about ourselves (Failure, feeling better than someone else, the misfortune of others)
Different types of misfortune- missed expectation, pain, financial ruin, mental emotional distress
Incongruity Theory- when a stereotype does not fit, opposite of what you expect to happen happens (wordplay, to emphasize something that doesn’t belong)
Relief Theory- it’s funny because society doesn’t want us to laugh at it ( removing a stressor, social pressure to follow a rule or rules)
Different types of social pressures- tragedies, behavior, laws, racism
We watched clips from The Office to better understand these theories.

Comedy is important to understand inside and outside of class because everyone tells jokes. To have a better understanding of the basics that usually make people laugh, you may be more successful in telling jokes.
