Catching Fire (this is the second book in the Hunger Games series) is the 2013 film adaptation of the novel by Suzanne Collins. To start off, the movie had quality costumes that fit the tone appropriately. For example, when Katniss and Peeta were on their victory tour, they wore nice but modest clothes which represented their new wealth but also the simplicity of their district 12 lifestyle. All of the capital people were dressed in quality costumes that showed off their wealth in a futuristic way. Throughout the movie there was more non diegetic audio than there was diegetic audio. The plot of the movie was the same as the plot of the book and the characters were portrayed how they were described in the book. Catching fire also had high quality cgi effects. The arena was created mostly with cgi and looked realistic. For most of the movie, there was dim lighting. The colors were also dull. When the characters were in the capital, the lighting was bright to create contrast from the districts. There were also many colors in the capital.
I myself am a huge fan of the books so I would rate this movie good good. Jennifer Lawrence captures the emotions of Katniss so well. All of the actors are perfect for the roles in which they play. I feel that there were some important details from the book that could have been squeezed in but overall the movie makers did a great job keeping the story line as spot on as they could without it being cluttered. For example, I feel as though Cinna is not made to be as important in the movies as he was in the books. However, the movie had a good flow from scene to scene and all of the information was important to the plot. The movie had amazing costumes and makeup that were very detailed and of high quality. When Katniss and Peeta rode on the chariot her flaming dress was beautiful. This was my favorite part of the movie. On another note, I think that the set of district 12 was appropriate and the use of dull colors created a bitter tone. Overall, I think this was a great adaptation and I would highly recommend it for those who love thriller movies with a dramatic twist.

I 100% agree with you. The costumes in this movie really helped contribute to the tone and gave the viewer an insight of how things are in that version of the future. I also feel the costumes where there to show a change from the way people dress today
ReplyDeleteJillian, I absolutely loved this review of catching fire. I have to agree with you wholeheartedly on this one. I thought it was a very nice movie and that it followed the book very well. Also, the cgi was very impressive in this book. Although,I personally cannot stand Katniss, she is annoying.
ReplyDeleteI did not think about the fact that katniss and Peeta's costumes during their victory tour represented their backgrounds. I agree with that and it is a great take on their humbleness.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree I liked this movie I think this was really well made even better than the first Hunger Games. GOOD GOOD
ReplyDeleteStrong review! It's been so long since I've seen this movie, but I remember liking it more than the first movie (even though I liked the first book the most of all three). But enough about me-- I like the way YOU zoom in on specific aspects of the movie so that you can highlight the strengths. Costumes/colors/set are all great observations. Consider how you can strengthen some of that word choice so your tone (positive/negative) is a bit more clear. Same thing with ideas like modesty-- a bit of a complicated term when you're looking at the gaudy fashion of the Capital v. the potato sacks worn in the districts. Second paragraph has a lot of good subjective stuff (because it's more focused on YOUR expectations/appreciation/reactions/etc.), but some of those pieces probably could have been in the objective section. Like the title, but probably could have been a bit more tailored to your film review. Nice work!
