A Classic Made in 2018 (Good,Good)

Recently I´ve had the pleasure of watching Ready Player One the film.  An instant  Steven Spielberg classic that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of.  The cinematics and pop culture references of the 1980s mixed in to today's pop culture made the film remind me of my childhood instantly.
James Halliday created a video game universe named the Oasis in the plot of this movie, which basically takes over the real world.  With the video game currency being worth more than the US dollar, the Euro, etc, the whole world logs onto the Oasis day in and day out to do whatever they want.  Whether it is having a job, going to school, playing any video game imaginable, the Oasis has it all.  Wade Watts (the main Character in this plot) uses the Oasis to search for the Easter Eggs that his hero James Halliday has put into the Oasis, and once all 3 easter eggs are found the Oasis can be taken over by whom ever finds all of them.  This is where the 80s pop culture falls into place and Spielberg does what he does best.  The references throughout this movie of Pop Culture references such as Galactica, Delorean time machine cars, The Iron Giant and so many more props to the plot make the movie a true Spielberg classic because he has done this so many times in the past.  As well as the 1980’s pop culture references, the non diegetic audio soundtrack features some of the most notable songs of that era.  One of the very first scenes of the film has the song, “Jump”, by Van Halen playing while showing Wade for the first time.
Subjectively, I enjoyed every second of this movie.  Growing up with my father and my little brother, one of our favorite things to do was always watch movies together.  My dad, being an 80’s kid himself, showed us all of his favorite films growing up and a lot were Spielberg films including E.T, Indiana Jones, Jaws, etc.  While growing up watching these films they have remained to be my favorites, so seeing this movie in theatres with my dad and brother we all agreed it instantly reminded us of Spielberg's original films all 3 of us grew up watching.  Specifically seeing props from old movies made it even more enjoyable, especially for me one that stood out was the Delorean time Machine from the Back to the Future series.
Overall I believe this film one hundred percent earns the GOOD GOOD rating.  Not only was the film done extremely well cinematic quality wise with the inherited 80’s theme with references and the soundtrack, It was absolute eye candy and very enjoyable throughout the movie.

  1. Really nice review here, Will! Great details from the film and a clear mark between objective and subjective analysis. The subjective stuff is especially flavorful. Don't forget that objective doesn't inherently mean neutral! Think about how you can keep pushing the evaluative language in that part of the review. Nice title
