Sierra Burgess is a Loser is a netflix original romcom that was expected to tackle new relevant issues like body shaming, catfishing and modern beauty standards. Although, the film fails to do any of that justice and instead falls on it's head. There is one huge problem with this film that has to be addressed before anything else and that is that the main character is basically the villain of the film. This movie right off the bat seemed like it was going teach young girls that you don't have to be skinny and conventionally attractive to feel beautiful. The main character, Sierra Burgess is characterized to be an innocent, smart yet physically unattractive girl while the cliche pretty-bully "Veronica" seems like she was just torn from "Regina George" with the way she bullies Sierra and scoffs down at the other students walking in a group of 3 girls. although this theme falls on its head when the viewer repeatedly watches Sierra be a terrible person while Veronica becomes more of the protagonist. In the beginning of the film Veronica gives away Sierra's phone number to the cliche "attractive football quarterback who is really a nerd deep down" as a sort of prank. When the boy known as Jamie texts Sierra she starts going along with the lie and pretends to be Veronica in order to continue talking to Jamie. Sierra first befriends Veronica as she agrees to help Veronica study and then takes the catfishing as far as faking phone calls with the boy, faking a facetime call with the boy and even making veronica go on a date with Jamie, then covering his eyes when he leaned into kiss Veronica and kissing him instead all while Jamie had no idea. When things start to go sour Sierra spots Veronica and Jamie kissing and becomes angry, (even though Sierra was the one who created a fake relationship between the two) hacks Veronica's instagram and posts a picture revealing how Veronica got dumped by her ex boyfriend over text. After catfishing Jamie and making him think he was in a relationship with Veronica, kissing Jamie without his knowledge or consent, and publicly humiliating Veronica for doing nothing wrong Sierra simply writes a song for Veronica and Jamie in which they forgive Sierra for everything she has done and Jamie even asks Sierra to prom. This is the problem with the entire film, Sierra doesn't learn to accept herself and her looks and Sierra doesn't even get held accountable for all the hell she raised for the entire 2 hours of the film. Instead Sierra learns nothing, is still insecure about her looks, gets away with being an awful person and even gets the boy. This makes Veronica who was originally the mean girl antagonist of the movie ultimately the protagonist of the movie. This film set out to have a overweight unattractive lead in order to make a powerful statement about beauty standards and confidence but instead failed by making Sierra a terrible person and in turn making the pretty girl the true protagonist of the film.
The biggest problem I had with the film was the creepy undertones some of the scenes gave off. Such as when Sierra follows Jamie and Veronica around on their "date" and then Veronica covers Jamie's eyes and Sierra kisses him instead of Veronica. Not only is this extremely creepy Sierra goes around telling her friend Dan (the cliche gay best friend of the looser) things such as "We had our first kiss", "We had a moment" which makes Sierra even more pathetic. The longer I watched the movie the more and more I seemed to hate Sierra Burgess because her logic to me seemed completely flawed. She had no intention to come out to Jamie and tell him she wasn't the attractive cheerleader he thought she was but rather wanted to continue the lie for as long as she could basically living through the fake relationship she created. Not until the last final climatic scene was it revealed to Jamie that it was Sierra who he was talking too and Sierra wasn't even the one who told him instead a crying Veronica told him the truth after being humiliated by Sierra. It seems pointless to watch a movie where the main characters intentions did not push the plot forward. The movie casted a real deaf child in order to play the roll of Jamie's deaf brother, this is all in good taste until you realize that the only reason their is a deaf character in the first place is to set up one joke where Sierra refuses to speak in front of Jamie in fear he would recognize her voice from the phone calls and instead decides to pretend to be deaf. Overall my opinions on this movie will not change this movie was awful with a awful main character and it completely failed to have any character growth from Sierra and in result lands itself in the BAD BAD category.
Amanda,
ReplyDeleteGreat work! Very clear distinction between objective and subjective analysis and the tone is consistent throughout the entire review. The plot summary was helpful, but that's the only part of this first paragraph that slips towards neutrality. You do rip the plot apart, which is great, but consider how the constant quest for tone can help you balance the efficiency of writing. Subjective is also well done, and there's a clear sense of who YOU are (and your opinions) in this review. Also: love the title!
