My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Review - An Amazing Addition to the Series

I was able to go to see this movie in theaters recently, which I was extremely excited about. The movie is part of the anime series My Hero Academia based off the manga by Kohei Horikoshi. To put it in the most basic terms, it takes place in a world where having super powers (quirks) is normal, and being a superhero is a real occupation to protect the world from those who use their powers for evil. This is one of my absolute favorite anime right now. I had very high expectations for this movie, and I’m happy to say it went beyond my expectations.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes takes place in the series before a major battle between the strongest hero All Might and villain All for One; therefore it is confirmed it takes place in the storyline of the series. The students of the 1A hero course class at the UA Academy, a well known school to train heroes, have just finished their final exams and are ready to take a break from their intense school work. During this break, All Might, who is a teacher at the UA, visits I-Island with his student and protege Izuku Midoriya, known as Deku by most. Deku has been chosen to inherit All Might’s power and is training to learn how to use it, thus he was brought with him to the artificial moving island for I-Expo that is hosting the most powerful heroes. As it later turns out when they arrive, the majority of class 1A also decided to attend I-Expo over their break. Together, with the help of the daughter of All Might’s old partner, they must face villains who hacked into the island’s advanced security system during this event. Since the civilians and professional heros have been taken hostage essentially by using this system, they’re the only ones who can save the day. Now, although it took me forever to attempt to explain the plot and background information, the movie actually does a very good job of it. You do not have to have watched the anime series up until this point to get it, everything about the world they live in is laid out nicely in the beginning of the film. Not only that, but although the movie is a sort of “side story” in the main plot, it gives us more information about All Might’s background and old partner that the fans of the series had been dying to know more about. Other than that, although the plot got complicated at the end with several twists on who was really behind all this, the final battle was amazing. Visually speaking, everything was very detailed, well animated, and consistent through the entire movie, especially in this final fight scene. The combination of 3D modeling and 2D animation was blended quite well so it didn’t stick out. It was obvious some time and thought went into producing this film.

I honestly loved this movie. Since I’ve already seen the anime series up until this point, I already knew the characters well and had more context on the story. It was nice to see them all acting as the heroes they’re training to be, and working as a team. The final scene and battle had me and everyone else in the theater on the edge of their seats. Deku really gave it his all in the battle, and showed that he’s making progress on mastering All Might’s power. I would recommend this movie and series, even if you usually don’t have an interest in anime.

Rating: Good Good

  1. Nice work here, Kirsten! Especially with the dense history, you do a nice job of staying really evaluative. The tone almost slips into neutrality in the opening paragraph, but the language in the second half makes the tone much more clear. The examples that you selected are nice and specific. Nice title!
