Thor: Ragnarok

My favorite movie to watch on Netflix at the moment is Thor: Ragnarok. This is one of the many marvel movies in the marvel cinematic universe. Thor was the second movie made that was part of the Avengers and Ragnarok is the third Thor movie. The movie opening scene is Thor laying in a man-sized cage where he gets dropped hundreds of feet before he gets caught last second by a chain that was wrapped around him and meets Surtur, the god of flame who claims he plans on destroying Asgard in an event called Ragnarok. Thor then heroically calls his hammer and breaks free from the chains and kills Sultar and takes his crown back to Asgard so that Ragnarok can not happen by being put on the eternal flame. When Thor returns home with the crown, he reveals that his “Father” Odin was really his brother, Loki (the god of mischief), who can change his shape and sex. This leads to his real Father dying and his sister, Hila(god of death), returning to Asgard to claim the throne and take over the universe. She then fights Thor and Loki in space and they both land on Sakaar, a planet ruled by the Grandmaster. The scenes on this planet uses color composition to show the planet as a wonderland and a wasteland. He becomes a prisoner on the strange planet of Sakaar where he’s enlisted to participate in a series of gladiatorial fights. His first opponent: The Incredible Hulk. Eventually Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie team up to escape the planet to save Asgard. When they arrive, there is a war between Hila and her army and the Asgardians. They kill all of her army but she is too strong to kill themselves, so while all the Asgardians board a giant spaceship, Thor sends Loki to put Sulton’s crown into the eternal flame to start Ragnarok. Sulton destroys Hila and Asgard, leading to Thor directing the ship towards earth.

Even though the plot of the movie sounds quite dark, the film had many very hilarious scenes, including when Thor sees Hulk in the arena and screams “YEEEES, I KNOW THIS GUY”, which leads to him being picked up and smashed on the ground repeatedly. I love the way that this movie had two storylines going on at the same time and we stayed entertained by both. I still wish the film focused more on the Sakaar aspect because I feel Jeff Goldblum could have made an excellent villain if we focused on him more. I also loved the music choices in the fighting scenes because it made them more entertaining and enjoyable. The way the film foreshadowed the ending of the movie in the very beginning was genius because by the time I got to the end, I already forgot about the beginning so it was even more of a surprise. The implementation of both Hulk and Doctor Strange made the movie that much better and made it almost feel like an Avengers movie. In conclusion, I rate this movie GOOD GOOD because it is one of the best marvel movies yet.

  1. There's a lot of great work in here, Vaughn. Reread your paragraphs and think about tone. The first paragraph is objective, for sure, but it also slips into neutrality. Other than mentioning that it's your favorite, it's hard to tell whether you interpret these choices as good/bad things. The subjective paragraph does a great job with that, especially throwing in some nuance as you agree that (subjectively) you really enjoyed many aspects of the film, but still felt like Jeff Goldblum could have been better developed (100% agree, btw). Consider how you can bring in some of the flavorful language (that has such rich connotation) in your second paragraph into your first one. Also think about the title as being something unique from the film itself.
