Daily log blog 11/3/17
In class today we finished watching Get Out. We also finished our assignment of picking out 3 microaggressions that we found in the film. My three microaggressions were that on the first day when Chris got to the house Rose's father told him that he would’ve voted for Obama for a third term. This shows empathy because by voting for Obama if you’re white doesn’t mean that you understand certain struggles that may plague a black person. My second microaggression was all the comments that were made at the party. These comments were extremely uncomfortable for Chris and just heightened the creepiness of all of the people at the party and the overall tone of the whole movie. My third and last microaggression was the fact that Rose yelled for help when the “cop” came because she wanted to blame everything that happened on Chris. If the “cop” was the cop from the beginning of the movie he probably would’ve believed her and sent Chris to jail but the cop at the end was Chris’ friend Rod coming to save him. All of these develop empathy because it heightens the uncomfortableness of the entire film. In this film we get a taste of what it is like for a black person to receive tiny comments that could mean well but in the end it just makes everyone uncomfortable. But I have many questions about this movie. What about the other black man that went missing, what happened to him? The fire that started in the surgery room, did that burn down the whole house? Did all the white people living there have a piece of a black person's brain in theirs? I think that this ending could’ve been better because I was sort of confused on what happened. Especially the black man that went missing. Also why do all the black people react weird when they see a flash from a camera? This is Peele’s first film and it was excellent but maybe on his next one he could make what’s going on a little bit clearer for watchers.
