Be Reel Blog - The Gang Buys a Boat (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia)

The show It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia, directed by Rob McElhenny, is one of my favorite television shows of all time for it's ability to make me laugh throughout all of it's seasons and it's unique style. One episode in particular, however, remains my all-time favorite in the show, titled The Gang Buys a Boat. I consider this episode one of the funniest of the whole series and it's well-made too.

In the episode, Charlie, Mac, and Dennis buy a dirty boat with the money made from Mac and Dennis' company in attempt to feel what it's like to live large and in trying to fix up the boat eventually ruins everything. This episode's objective qualities allow it to present itself very well. The costumes are chosen in a way that describes how the characters are in the episode. Charlie and Frank are dressed in informal, shabby clothing to show that they're the ones doing all the hard work on the boat while Mac and Dennis dress neater and nicer than Charlie and Frank to show that they're not doing any of the work to clean up the boat and instead intend to live the high life and socialize with other high-life boaters. The way the characters act also reveals what each character is likely to do, since Charlie and Frank don't think about their actions and wreak havoc while Mac and Dennis plan every step out thoroughly and have nothing to do with the ending of the episode.

Subjectively this episode is amazing. The episode is funny all the way through in both plot lines, the plot lines being the boat fixing plot and the Mac and Dennis trying to live the high life plot, and all the actions are timed perfectly to make all the jokes funny. The characters are all likable in some way even though they're all full of themselves and it makes the episode enjoyable to watch. Overall I would put this episode in the Good, Good section of the chart since I loved the show and it was crafted beautifully.

  1. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" never fails to overall show the human capabilities of screwing up. This episode is no exception. Subjectively, the show is absolutely hilarious. The characters, though narcissistic are charming, witty, and charismatic. Objectively, the characters are shown in costumes that clearly depict what is going on in the show. Charlie and Frank are dressed in work gear to fix the boat, while of course Dennis and Mac are dressed formally to try and fit with the wealthy boat people.
