Be Reel Blog: Riverdale

Riverdale, A Netflix Original, is based of a comic book called Archie Comics and created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. The shows  begin with the death of one of the rich and popular Blossom twins on the 4th of July. The town of Riverdale flips upside down to investigate the murder and reveals the secrets of what actually happened on that 4th of July.
Objectively speaking, the series is okay. The cinematography is good with a lot of factors of mise-en scene. The film production of this series seems very high end and is very sharp. While on the other hand everything seems to fall short. The acting in this movie is not good. And the plot of the series is mediocre at best. Riverdale is a typical high school drama television show that presents bad acting time and time again. The plot also reminds me of a television series called Scooby Doo. The plot of this series seems overall a little bit childish and redundant. The shows seems to only have cinematography going for it.
Subjectively I think the show is horrible. It seems to fall short in every aspect. The dialogue, the characterization, and the plot all seem flat. Their acting in my opinion is horrible. It seems so fake and cheesy. Another aspect that is weak is the character development. The characters are not very likeable. Its like they aren't aware of how they act. Another bad part of the series is the plot. The plot is just another corny high school drama. The audience doesn't even get a chance to see the background of the characters, but it shoved into the setting of Riverdale. Another thing I find disturbing is the main character, Archie, having an affair with his music teacher.

My final rating of Riverdale is Bad, Bad

  1. I watched Riverdale in September and it was one of my favorite shows. When I finished all of the seasons I was devastated that it ended. Personally I can't wait for the new season to start! Did you not like the drama that happened throughout the show? I felt as if the characters knew how they were acting. If the characters didn't know what they were doing then why would there be so much drama that happened? Personally I loved Archie, even though he did have an affair with his music teacher he ended up straightening his life out in the end. I get what you mean when you say the show is redundant but it is not childish. If the show was childish then they would not have out in some of the scenes that they did! The show wouldn't have the mystery and drama. If you think about it Scooby Doo was a mystery but the characters were animated and take everything as a joke and in Riverdale the characters are real people and they show emotion which makes the plot connect to the audience. The plot isn't just about high school drama, because the high school kids are the ones that try to figure out the mystery. Did you like the ending of Riverdale where they left us on a cliffhanger? Leaving us in the cliffhanger made me so mad, because I got so into the whole mystery aspect of who killed who. I like watching a mystery show and trying to solve the crime before everyone else does and Riverdale made it so good on trying to trick you in a sense of who was the real killer. It was different to see that someone didn't like the show as much as I did, but I guess that why everyone is different. We all don't like the same kind of shows.

I too, for the most part would have to agree with you. Riverdale is completely childish in terms of plot, and just seems completely nonsensical. This is completely correct in every way. In addition to this, I found the plot quite predictable. I knew who the true killer was within the first episode, and knew what would happen in the series' big twist ending before it even happened. The acting is quite atrocious, and it seems like they're chasing a different target audience than you and I. And from what I've seen on Instagram, they appear to be reaching it. Some people love this show.
Archie's relationship with his music teacher is very, very strange and incredibly uncomfortable for anybody to watch, but I'd argue that they did that on purpose.
Now despite all these criticisms I have about Riverdale, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the show. I did actually enjoy this show. It was the only series that I've ever watched that I've watched in it's entirety in a marathon. In hindsight, the show basically is a Scooby-Doo remake for young adults. (Granted, Scooby-Doo was awesome. This, however, was not.)

  3. I agree with Alexis in how Riverdale is a great show. Riverdale is one of my favorite shows out right now besides Stranger things and I also can't wait for more episodes. I find that the plot is intriguing due to the mystery in who killed Jason and I for one was completely surprised when they revealed who it was. I think the drama of the show made it even more interesting and have to disagree with the comments on the acting. Personally, I think that all the actors portray their character perfectly and each add their own twist to the role. I could see how someone might not like one of the main characters Archie because sometimes his character can act a bit weird but overall, i think the actor plays the role well. Another thing is I find that most of the characters are likeable and somewhat relatable. For me, I hate Cheryl Blossom at some points but then the next episode I like her. I think it all depends on preference and the actions the characters make on the show. For example, I disliked Archie when he had something going on with his music teacher Ms. Grundy but then I ended up loving him when he took initiative about finding the truth about the Blossoms.

  4. You described the plot very well and I agree that the acting could be better. I do however have to disagree when it comes to the quality of the plot. the plot is different from the usual cookie cutter murder mystery shows and the director has very little wiggle room when it comes to creativity due to the fact that they are following the story from a comic. I think is really funny that you compared Riverdale to Scooby Doo because they are low key so similar. The concept of how a group of kids try to find the murderer or monster only to discover that it’s not a made up creature but a real human being that was very close to the victim. It’s a real mature concept so i think that the creators of Scooby Doo wanted to expose kids to this scary reality in a more playful, and childish way. I also have to agree with you about how the character have no clue how their actions affect others.
