Pride and Prejudice- Mallory Collins

Jane Austen´s Pride and Prejudice has to be one of my all time favorite novels, having read at least 9 times. It follows the story of a young headstrong girl, Lizzie ,set in the early 1800´s. As the book continues we meet several different characters, one being the infamous Mr. Darcy. With reading this story you would expect the two to madly fall in love at first sight and live happily ever after, but, spoiler alert, it doesn't happen (well at least in that way). Though it is very easy to spot Mr. Darcy´s affections towards Lizzie, she does not feel the same. Being very prejudice, she views Darcy as a rich snob who doesn't deserve her time. She begins to believe certain rumors regarding Mr. Darcy, and immediately takes a strong disinterest in him. Mr. Darcy being completely oblivious to the fact that Elizabeth hates him, like any man would, continues to purge his feelings towards her. After many awkward encounters Mr. Darcy finally confesses his feelings only to be brutally denied by the young women. After some time and DRAMA Lizzie finally begins to see her mistake within rejecting Mr. Darcy. And after a while they finally have their groundbreaking romantic scene. So while they do end up in a happy ending, it took a little while to get there.

Typically I find major flaws when it comes to a book being adapted into a film, but surprisingly the movie did Jane Austen´s story justice. While watching with the non-diegetic music and dialogue, the viewer begins to get a certain feel for the time period, making it much easier to fully understand the story. Along with the background music, the lighting had much to do within the film. One of my favorite scenes is of Mr. Darcy dramatically strutting through a large field, making his way towards Lizzie during the sunrise. Finally reaching her, he proclaims one of the best love dialogues ever written. With the longing stares between the two characters and the soft gleamy lighting, a romantic feel is set throughout the scene. This is one of the major factors the the book was missing. With the lack of visual appeal, the novel does not portray the same emotions that the movie allows us to feel between the characters. While both perfect, the movie definitely created more of a romantic setting. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite stories and I love it, most ardently.
