2019-->Here... We... Go

Hello, fellow students who are not back from holiday break because they booked a longer vacation. I just wanted to take the chance and say Happy New Year and welcome to the year of 2019. I hope everyone had a fun, festive, and mostly relaxing break. I was supposed to Blog the day before we went on break but I, unfortunately, left school sick that day. Ergo, I will write today's blog which (I am not going to lie) I'm totally excited to blog. I hope you find this helpful and fun.

As of today, we are only three weeks away from the end of the marking period, we went over the game plan for the next few weeks and then the end of the year. First things first

1. Senior Paper Notes---- ideas due Monday

      Start to think about ideas for the focus of your paper such as:
            - Film or films
            - Lenses that occur in those films
            - An academic question, problem, solution, or connection to the focus of the overall paper

2.  Working Your Butt Off= Not taking the final
           -You must have an average of an 89.5 for the whole year or above to be exempt. Ergo, work your butt off to make sure that will never, ever happen.

3. Podcast Community

4. Narrative Film Paper

5. Final Exam----> REFER TO NUMBER 2

Then to start the year off on a good note, we reflected. So for the past two weeks, we have had quite a bit of free time (for some of us). So the question is

"What was the best thing you watched over break?"

I personally am a loser who only saw about two movies over the break. I didn't even rewatch movies, TV shows, or even watch the newscast on New Year's Eve. I know I am weird. I got the chance to see Aquaman yesterday and I watched Dumplin' on Netflix. I have to say I was pretty disappointed with both movies (see my last be reel blog and stay tuned for my next to be reel blog for further details of my disappointment).

The next question we asked was

"How about the best movies in 2018?"

This struck me hard. I thought really really hard and only one movie came to mind, I bet you even already know that its Bohemian Rhapsody for those of you who hear me talking about it non stop. The question after that really got to me:

"How many movies have you watched in 2018?"

If you were there, you would know I gave the most puzzled look for my reaction. It literally was like trying to pull a number out of the sky. Then I thought back: I watched a lot of films on the ways to tournaments on weekends, vacations, and family gatherings. I watched a lot of film in school when we had absolutely nothing to do. And the most film I have ever watched was in Mr. Ari Rheinstein's class which I am not going to lie really helped me understand history better. So even though I couldn't give anyone a clear number or estimate, I am pretty sure it is a lot and last time I checked, I apparently don't watch enough film.

After that, we all shared a list on classroom comments of our top 5 anything that had to do with films. For example, I did my top 5 guilty pleasure movies.

1. Emperor's New Groove
2. National Treasure
3. Bring It On: In It To Win It
4. Pete's Dragon (the old version with the musical numbers in it)
 *I know it's cheesy
5. Miss Congeniality

So yes, I like these movies a lot and I feel very guilty about it because of the amount of bad press around these movies. If you feel the same way I do about these movies, please don't hesitate to let me know I am not alone with the joy that these movies bring me.

To finish off the day, we watched and very epically talked about how much the 2018 Youtube Rewind just really sucked. It was offensive to others and mostly our generation as a whole. It had no flow, the script was flawed, and the actors said some good milestones of 2018 in a rather offensive way. It is now the most hated video in Youtube history according to Mr. River and gaining more and more views overnight to see the worst video in history. We all were very offended of how our 2018 was represented on important milestones for the world. We were also very upset because they could have talked about some of the more serious events from that year so we could have learned from them. It was overall way too cliche and scratched only the surface of what 2018 really stood for like a year.

In a way, I have a weird conspiracy on the video and the choices made to make that video as a whole. We talked, and I learned that the video had a lot of sponsors paying for the video and the more views that the video got, the more money the Youtube and these sponsors get. So I thought back to the Greatest Showman. PT Barnum was able to get people to see his show by taking a bad review of his show and putting in every paper possible so people would want to see for themselves the "indecent" of the show. After he did that, his shows that only sold about 3 tickets each were quickly sold out every day. If you see my point, what if Youtube is purposely using the bad press of a bad video to get more views and ultimately make more money. It is just a theory. But it is something to think about. Call me crazy, but that is my thoughts because a lot of people incorporated their ideas for this video, if this was the best they could do, you wonder how such well-qualified people could make such a joke as this. Ok, I am done ranting if you are still reading this. Hope everyone has a great start to their New Year and good night.
