Mr. Rivers begun the class by giving us tips on our Literature Review, he told us to focus on the evidence by the professors and researchers (in every paragraph) rather than focusing on arguing. This paper should NOT be argumentative.
Every paragraph must have evidence.
Mr. Rivers also moved the due date of the Literature review to Tuesday, we will be doing APA/ MLA formatting in class on Monday.
We should have 2 or more sources in our Literature review.
Evidence Integration
- Evidence should be integrated so "you can't hear the quotation marks".
- Make sure the topic is relevant so your essay retains its 'flow'. (introduce quote)
- Explain relevance to argument
-"quote" (citation). - Citation tied to end of punctuation
Paraphrasing
-Mr. Rivers also explained that paraphrasing is an effective way to spread evidence throughout your paragraph. Inserting one quote and then paraphrasing the rest of the evidence from the same source would be an effective way too keep evidence throughout your paragraph without having to constantly integrate quotes.
next, we looked at examples of other student's writing
NE - Major Speakers, Topics, and Ideas (+integrating evidence)
According to Joan Walsh, in November 2016, “... an astonishing 16,000 women have contacted Emily’s List, which works to elect pro-choice Democratic women, to say they want to run,” (Walsh).
In this example the student introduces the evidence and professional in that field then inserts her quoted data which includes a statistic about her topic and she cites her evidence after the quote.
For the rest of the class, Mr. Rivers allowed us to work on our own. My topic is on Solitary confinement and the effects on the individuals having to face it. I had chosen my 2 sources I would be using already, although I would like to include more studies on the effects of Solitary confinement on animals so I can compare and apply these to humans, including how monkeys exhibit psychotic behavior when contained alone in a small cage, how hamsters have a less of a will to eat/ drink when in a small enclosure with no stimulation and how rats become hooked on a drug filled water bottle while in a small enclosure alone rather than choosing to drink normal water when in a large enclosure with other rats and a lot of stimuli. It is hard to find sources for these studies on the databases so I may have to dive into more research trying to figure out more about each individual study. Mr. Rivers examples and tips on quote integration will help me write my Literature Review.
