Class Blog: 12/18/17

Today in class we opened up by dicussing about what it means to be authentic. We discussed with our groups and my group came up with genuine and true. We then dicussed it with our class and we viewed it as something original, of yours, honest and real, and genuine/true. After our discussion, we then were asked to write down what writers to to be authentic and is it similar to what we wrote on Wednesday of last week. I said that writers use ideas that they have made up and write them  down on paper. This is different to what we wrote on Wednesday because our writing was NOT authentic because we were not writing something that was original. After we wrote down our ideas, we discussed it with our groups. My group said that since you had to come up with it on the spot and that you can't memorize what you want to write about, it wasn't authentic. After that, we discussed it with the class. The class said that the letter was not authentic because the topic was already plotted out for us and there was also lack of revision in the letter because of the lack of time we had while writing the letter. After Mr. Rivers and the class talked about it, we were then asked to open up classroom and  read a document which was called, "What writers really do when they write", by Bob Saunders. We analyzed the document and we learned some very important things. For example, we learned that specificity helps in writing a letter. When you write a sentence, "Bob was an asshole", it lacks specificity. When you write, "Bob snapped at the barista because she reminded him of his dead wife", we see a more specifc case of the sentence. After we analyzed the document, we were asked to unsubmit our letters and correct them using the scale which is provided on the document itself. We were asked to highlight what was good and what was bad in the letter, like positive and negative choices in pur writing. We worked on that through the remainder of the class and we will finish it tomorrow.
