"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is a holiday classic that everyone knows! However, my review isn't on the original Grinch cartoon. My review is with Jim Carrey's portrayal of the character. As a child, I adored this movie. I decided to give it another watch this holiday season. The way that I viewed it as a child is incredibly different than what I remember it being. To be honest, I'm not sure how I wasn't creeped out by this movie when I was little. However, I really enjoyed it.
Objectively, the movie is sort of...odd, to say the least. The characters are of course odd looking because they're Whos! However, I noticed that there were a lot of odd shot angles. At the beginning, the movie is completely chaotic because it is christmas time. During these scenes, there are a lot of shots from below, and a lot of close ups. I just found it interesting that these shot angles were chosen for these specific scenes. It made me anxious, to be completely honest. However, the oddness of it is sort of beautiful. The characters have odd mannerisms, odd traditions, and an over obsession with Christmas. It is most definitely something that not everyone will like, especially if you're a cartoon fan. However, if you're like me and up for some change, this movie is it. On another note, I also enjoyed the lesson that it taught. Cindy Lou was able to change the Grinch completely by just being kind, and I think the whole concept is really sweet.
Subjectively, the movie was adorable AND hilarious. Jim Carrey took the character and made him a bitter, hilarious, relatable, loner of a character. He was creepy, but at the same time incredibly entertaining. As a child, I never saw the Grinch as creepy. Now however, I see him AND the whos as sort of creepy. I think the actor choice is what really made this movie. The little girl, Cindy Lou, is absolutely adorable and lovable. The contrast between her and the Grinch is perfect. I also love how the movie ends with the Grinch and Martha May together. Overall, this movie was incredibly weird, yet entertaining. For this reason, I'm going to rate it good good.
