Daily Log Blog: 12/18/17

Class started off today with Mr.Rivers letting us know that if you are interested in talking about the new Star Wars movie you should come to film club tomorrow after school. After that we opened up a conversation about authenticity. What is it? What does it do? Authenticity basically creates a sense of originality, first of its kind, real and not fake and genuine. We then moved into the "Bobs" which were examples of writings that provides examples of stating and explaining. We used two questions to analyze these statements, how are these Bobs different, and how do the writer's choices change Bob. The examples that we used in class were, "Bob was an asshole," and the second was "Bob snapped impatiently at the barista." We came to the conclusion that the first statement was an opinion just stating that Bob was a bad person overall. The second statement was explaining how he is as a character and that he might of had a bad day. The third statement was, "Bob snapped immediately at the young barista, who reminded him of his dead wife," we said that Bob has a past and he is the victim. The last and final statement that we analyzed was, "Bob snapped at the young barista, who reminded him of his dead wife, who he missed so much, especially now, at Christmas time," we said that this statement creates empathy, and specificity. After that activity we connected it back to the idea of authenticity. We read an article by George Saunders that explains his method of writing anything, in the article he states that he, "...imagines a meter mounted in my forehead with "P" on this side (Positive) and "N" on this side (Negative)." By doing this writing process you are creating your own writing which is original and authentic to you. After that we came back to the two questions that we saw when we came into class today which were, "What do writers really do when they write?" and "How is it different from what you did last Wednesday?" My group and I explained that writers revise, edit, rewrite and repeat. They do it over and over again until they get it right and for the second question we said that Most of us did not have enough time to revise, edit, rewrite and repeat because of the time constriction. More specifically there were obstacles that we faced which were, time constriction which created problems for phrasing, proofreading, finding the needle, and the mentality splurge that we all faced in that 42 minute period. Other obstacles included limited resources (Only allowed to use book and notes).
To end class Mr.Rivers assigned us to unsubmit and reread our letter to self evaluate. More specifically we have to highlight the 12 sub categories that were on the original letter rubric according to our own positive and negative scale.
