Big Mouth is a modern day rendition of the outdated sex-ed film, Am I Normal?, with the audacity of a Seth MacFarlane production. The writers (Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett) portray the horrors all have come to experience going through puberty in the most bombastic way imaginable. Who would've thought such a show could be so magically entertaining.
The show follows Nick and Andrew, played by the writers of the show of the same name, as they navigate their way through the seventh grade and the problems that come with that time.
Supposedly and quite clearly an embellished version of Kroll and Goldberg’s childhood, Big Mouth is effective with the delivery of many of its jokes and the animation and acting are top notch. Juvenile yet wickedly hilarious, Big Mouth stands out amongst Netflix’s many original productions as a diamond in the rough. The slew of supporting characters keep the story at a steady pace, presenting many new problems and story-line for Andrew and Nick to uncover. There are underlying story arcs of first crushes, sexuality, peer pressure, and love versus lust. Jessi, played by Jessi Klein, is a refreshing secondary character that is well fleshed out throughout the shows first 10 episodes and is a character the audience cares about. Her side of puberty from the female perspective provides a change of pace from the bombastic nature of male puberty that is the focus of the show. Additionally there are one or two episodes that deal with some themes dealt with in high school as well such as s*** shaming, attempted forced sexual acts, and rumors.,What makes Big Mouth really stand out though is the delivery of its themes and the nostalgia it brings to its audience.
Often considered a rough time for many, Big Mouth allows those who went through the horrors of puberty to look back and laugh at those times rather than dread to remember them. For the younger audience that might be watching this show, the messages the show transmits about dealing with the issues of puberty are well delivered and meaningful unlike shows such as Family Guy or American Dad who either lack a theme and message or toss it in at the end of an episode just as a throw in.
Big Mouth is a fun and enjoyable Netflix original not recommended for those who dislike a wild comedic tone but recommended to those who can look back on their younger years and laugh as well as those going through those times currently. The shows deserves a Good/Good and I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to do so.
