At the start of class today Mr.Rivers went over the organization and pre-production of our satire podcast. We also discussed Amanda's daily log blog from the 12th and talked about how important it is to comprehend the satire paradox in order to understand hidden messages and meaning inside of the film,¨Thank You for Smoking¨.
We left off, ¨Thank You for Smoking¨ with Nick receiving the suitcase of money, which we soon learned is used to bribe a cowboy(The Marlboro Man). More importantly, this scene helps spawn the relationship we see building between Nick and his son. Nicks son is constantly asking questions and always wants to be involved in Nicks work. We can see their relationship build throughout the film and it feels very genuine.
Aside from the relationship building, this scene from the movie we that we watched helped give us insight into the life of Nick Nailer, behind the scenes. We realized the lady he has been hooking up with is only using him for information. We also learn the consequences of being a lobbyist, those consequences being death threats from other companies, loss of loved ones, and being hated by most of the United States. In the scene, we watched Nick actually get kidnaped and he almost died due to nicotine overdose, which Nick surprising turns around into his favor, being the lobbyist he is. Although sadly right when things were on the up and up, the reporter he was in cahoots with ¨suprisingly¨ spilled the beans about Nicks life and intentions essentially ruining his life. Despite the fact, Nick son still thinks of him as a god, and actually gives Nick support and advice through these hard times and we can see the impression Nick had on his son.
Due to the half day on Friday, podcasts will be on Monday.
