Today in class we discussed satire and how it can be either ironic or sincere and positive or negative. To help get a better understanding of this we watched two clips. One being a trailer of the movie They Came Together and the other a simpsons clip featuring Banksy and his artwork.
They Came Together is a romantic comedy that mocks stereotypical romantic comedies. Basically Paul Rudd’s character meets Amy Poehler’s character and they bond over fiction books. As a class it is noticed that it is ironic and mostly positive with some negativity but nothing is really sincere. While on the other hand the Simpsons clip shows the theme song which is funny but it takes a turn where it just makes you feel uncomfortable with hard facts.
In the Simpsons Matt Groening decides to show slave labor of Simpson’s merchandise being sold. Why is this sincere? Well it just goes to show world problems and that a Simpson’s shirt you might have bought was from a sweatshop were people are basically forced to work. What adds to this sincerity is the diegetic audio in the back, which happens to be the theme from Schindler’s List. So the two examples of satire showed either ironic get positive or sincere and negative.
