Thursday- Liberal Vs Conservative Satire

In today’s class, Mr. Rivers started by introducing the idea of politics in satirical film. We were thought that satire can be inherently political, with politics being the study of power.

We then went on to talk in our groups about what liberal ideas are. Some liberal characteristics are as follows; Liberals advocate for change, they are very progressive in their ideals, they advocate for group freedoms, and they believe in socialism, which is when the government runs services within the country.

Next, we discussed conservative ideals, and this are as follows; conservatives enjoy individual rights, private service, as poised to the liberal ideal of services being run by government, they believe in capitalism, which allows for a free market, they advocate for traditional values, and they interpret the constitution very explicitly, and are known to be very “by the book.”

We then went on to watch a clip and and we were asked What does the text critique or mock about? The clip was a mock of the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The clip was ridiculous, and used satire to make fun of the lies and terrible tendencies of the two candidates. After the clip, we were asked to speak in our groups about how the clip portrayed conservatives, and how it portrayed liberals. The clip made conservatives look racist and very straight forward in their ideas, and made liberals look like they are trying too hard to fit in with the youth of America. As a class, we agreed that the clip was biased toward the ideas of liberals, and therefore supported Hillary Clinton. In the end, this makes us question the effect of satire because Donald Trump was the overall winner in the presidential election.

Next, we started listening to The Satire Paradox. He opens by talking about Steven Colbert, and how he uses satire in his work.

Looking ahead, we have our reflection due today and our blog post due tonight.
