Chaos vs. Cosmos in Dodgeball

Today, Wednesday February 27th, we discussed how chaos and cosmos are represented in Dodgeball. We also briefly discussed, as a class, how we can improve our second podcast recordings.
General Podcasting Advice:
  • Justify a difference of opinion by incorporating more debate
  • Follow your notes and write down transitions in advance
  • Lightly research during the podcast (if needed)
  • Maintain an enthusiastic tone of voice
  • Look for synonyms for words used too often
  • Check microphone quality
  • Stay on topic to avoid choppy sentences
  • Keep track of time
Later in class we reviewed comedy themes. More specifically, we focused on how texts, such as Dodgeball argue chaos and cosmos. Chaos is the problem presented to the main character(s) and cosmos is the solution to these problems.
Where is chaos in Globo Gym´s commercial at the beginning of the movie?
  • Ugliness is a problem
  • Demeaning someone so they are dependent on you
  • Profiting off of self-hatred
  • Physical fitness is EVERYTHING
  • Goodman is entitled
Where is cosmos in Average Joe's commercial at the end of the movie?
  • You are perfect the way you are
  • Encourage health and friendship
  • Down to Earth
  • Kids
From the last scene shown, the two teenage characters are with child, mocking the matrimony at the end of most comedies. Also, Steve, who doubted his life as a pirate, returns as a pirate in the credits. The assertion is that Steve should a pirate. This final scene creates the theme that you should become who you want to be, which applies to the entire film. The chaos represents the world in disorder, but returns to how it should be in the end.
