Today we had a shorter class period since we had an early dismissal due to inclement weather. We continued to watch the comedy film Dodgeball. While doing so, we resumed expanding our knowledge on comedy by filling out our “Dodgeball Comedy Tracker” document. I continued to fill out my document in class and began digging into the “Humor Theory Bingo” section. This activity is consists of filling out blocks from the 3 main theories of humor we have been studying: Relief, Superiority, and Incongruity. A particular example of one of the theories of humor that I saw while watching the film was the incongruity theory. It was shown when it was revealed that one of the girl scouts was on steroids and mild beaver tranquilizers; A kid and steroids isn’t normal so the comedy is derived from that. Though I discovered this example of the incongruity theory, the film is littered with other examples of relief theory and superiority theory.
At this point in the “Dodgeball Comedy Tracker,” students should have filled out the “Chaos” part of the “CHAOS → COSMOS” section. The “Chaos” part is meant to address the main issue(s) that are present in the film. The “Cosmos” part will be filled out later on in the film towards the concluding scenes/resolution.
On a different note, everything we’re learning about comedy is greatly applicable to our everyday lives. For most people, not a day goes by where they don’t have a laugh or two and by understanding comedy, you can understand exactly why things are funny to yourself and to others and use that to your advantage. For example, If you’re trying to impress someone, say, a girl/boy, an interviewer, or just a stranger, understanding what people perceive as funny can help you get a leg up in most cases. Although, you must tread carefully because many people may not see the things you think are funny are funny. Finally, just a few reminders: make sure you’re prepared for the podcast by watching your film along with a charged chromebook and charged phone. Lastly, don’t forget about your daily log blog!!!
