Hello everyone. I have not written a daily log blog in what seems like ages so I am extremely excited to talk about what we did on this spectacular Thursday in class. But a few side notes before I start. Today, as some of you know and can really appreciate, we had a snowstorm that turned into ice that turned into puddles all within less than 24 hours; it caused an early dismissal on Wednesday and a 2 hour delayed opening on Thursday. Ergo, our lesson plans were backed up a lot because of the reduced amount of time in class, not being able to have the second half of the day classes, etc. I know that for some of you that this was the best thing that has ever happened. However, for me, it killed me on the inside because:
1. We were falling behind in the movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
2. We wouldn't be able to finish the film that we are analyzing in class this week.
3. I actually find a lot of joy in this movie. I admit a lot of the films in the class weren't put on my favorite film's list. But that is nobody's fault. I just have really specific cheesy, guilty pleasure taste in genre. And my favorite genre just happens to be Comedy. I do not know why I find a story that starts in negative chaos and then ends in positive cosmos to be so enjoyable for me, but I do. I guess I really like those cheesy, predictable endings. I know its weird believe me.
I am not going to lie to you all but this is my most favorite unit EVER. Comedy is my most favorite genre and helps me to relax when I am most stressed or crazy. I really enjoy this unit. So I guess by now, if you're still reading my novel, I am crazy about this unit. Also one last side note, I promise: I can actually relate to the film because I played for an actual dodgeball team at Skyzone for a year and watch the national championship on TV every year since it has gotten bigger.
Anyways our job today was to fill out the Comedy Tracker Bingo Sheet that was posted on the classroom. I have to admit there were a million examples. Some were PG-13 but I think we are way past that by now. The goal was to find each of the following:
1. An example of Relief Theory in the film. Relief theory is when we find humor out of comments that are not socially acceptable or are inappropriate to say in public.
- My example is from the scene where Peter tries to convince Kate to be on the dodgeball team. Kate apparently played softball for 8 years has good aim and a strong arm. However, Kate is working for the gym and says no at first because it is a conflict of interest. But then Peter says to Kate, "C'mon Kate. Time to put your mouth where our balls are". This is a good example because it would be seen as inappropriate in society because it's referring to a sexual connotation when thought about literally. But that is what makes it so funny because he is referring to the balls in dodgeball.

2. An example of the Superiority Theory in the film. This is when we laugh at someone's misfortune. When we laugh at someone's misfortune it tells us as people that we are superior and it gives us this sense of superiority and at the same time makes us laugh.
-My example is of the scene where the Average Joe's team watches the educational video on Dodgeball. And in this educational film, they go over picking people on your team. In this video, their advice was to pick the bigger stronger players to be on your team. It furthermore makes the audience feel more superior and therefore laughs and making them more confident.

3. An example of the Incongruity Theory in the film. This is basically the random jokes that seem to come from out of nowhere or when two, unlike things, are pulled together in a connection gone wrong and therefore making it humorous.
-My example comes from the scene when Average Joe's gets exposed to the other teams that have gathered from around the world and all different cultures. Then out of nowhere, the pirate screams out a random fact that in some cultures that is common that they eat and SWALLOWS their own vomit. Yes, this is just gross. Yes, this is just a weird fact to know. And yes this is just simply RANDOM. But that is what makes it so humorous.
And because of the short class period, that was all we had time for. Tomorrow is all about that first podcast. Also, keep in mind that it is a full period. But a simple reminder that tomorrow that you will need a charged Chromebook/laptop, a fully charged cell phone, and to watch the movie in order to have a good understanding of that movie. My movie this week is Dr. Strangelove and let me say before you listen to it that I guaranteed 15 minutes of ranting for Dr. Strangelove. Stay tuned class...
