Over the last week I went and saw the latest Marvel movie, Black Panther directed by Ryan Coogler. This movie had plenty of hype about it all over the media, and I was really looking forward to seeing it. Here is a quick synopsis: Black Panther himself a.k.a. T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take over his father’s throne after following his death. When he gains power, he quickly encounters an enemy who causes extreme conflict as their powers clash as they fight for the throne of Wakanda. His home land and the rest of the world is at risk of treachery and danger, however the king must fight his way back to the throne to save everyone.
Coming in with a 97% Rotten Tomato rating, the film did extremely well in theaters. I had many “likes” about this movie, such as the special effects, the costume design, the soundtrack, and the cast. Everything in this movie was very interesting to see and learn about as the plot progressed. Subjectively I enjoyed how the movie had a lot of moments that you did not see coming. It sort of took on the typical action movie plot, where the hero gets conflicte by a villain and ends up overcoming it and saves the people, but it had a lot more twists and turns throughout it. I enjoyed seeing all of the action parts that took place and how they were tackled by the director, and everything was just badass overall. I also loved seeing the awesome technology that the king used, and his sister (who was in charge of creating all of his weapons and gear) provided a lighthearted and comedic relief to the movie as well. She created his suit and all of the weapons he used which was awesome to see, and brought a cool insight in being the superhero. The emotions felt in the movie ranged from anger to happiness to shame to anticipation and many more. I really became invested into the movie and became connected to the characters as one would with a television show, and I left the theater feeling very content with how the movie was made.
Objectively, the movie was made extremely well whether it was the special effects, the costume design, 0r the overall story. To start with the special effects, obviously Marvel is notorious for having extremely well done effects that enhance the movie in every way. The action scenes were so swift and smooth, with a soundtrack that matched the tone perfectly, and if you haven’t listened to Kendrick Lamar's album for the movie, I suggest you listen to it. The color grading was stark yet luminescent at the same time, following the “black panther’s” dark theme. Another aspect of the film that made you feel part of the story is the use of the African culture, along with the beautiful shots of the African landscape and ambient soundtrack. The story was very interesting and there was never a dull moment. It is hard to explain what happens without spoiling the story, so if you are interested in Marvel movies, I would definitely suggest watching this one.
