The minds of Michael Schur(co-writer for Parks and Recreation) and Dan Goor and the talent of Andy Samberg comes the one of a kind sitcom/cop show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Brooklyn Nine-Nine centers around Brooklyn's 99th precinct and their cases and another side story most of the time. Andy Samberg stars as carefree detective Jake Peralta in this unique hybrid cop show and sitcom.
This show strikes a beautiful balance between comedy and sincerity by carefully weaving together a sitcom and a traditional cop show. Schur was able to accomplish this by keeping the main plot structure of a typical cop show, the police discover a criminal then work to bring him to justice, while also inserting well timed jokes to lighten the mood. The addition of a side story also helps to lighten the mood by allowing a time to add more jokes than would be appropriate for the criminal plot while also allowing for a more comic plot of the side story.
By weaving together these seemingly contradictory genres Schur was able to create a light hearted cop show or a comedy that had a very satisfying plot, depending on the episode. One of the newest episodes, S5 E14, leaned more towards the cop show side of the spectrum. In the concluding scene below we can clearly see how aspects from both comedies and cop shows were weaved together. The cop show is clearly distinguishable by the typical scene of a suspect being interrogated and the cops trying to get a confession out of him while the comedy was lessened in order to maintain the tone and have a pleasing ending. However the comedy was still there in the form of relief, Jake’s short asides during his interrogation, and incongruity/superiority, when they were about to go home and then realized that they couldn’t, and some more subtle jokes sprinkled in. By combining these two aspects the show is much more engaging than most sitcoms and much more light hearted than most cop shows making it a great show to help you relax.
(you will notice things you missed the 2nd time you watch it)
Overall this show mostly focuses on the power of friendship and how friends will have your back, help you out, and give you inspiration. Although not shown in this episode or clip, that theme permeates through the show, weather cops need help to crack a case or watch their kids or even open a food truck the close knit community of the 99th precinct will always help each other out. This helps to show the importance and power of friendship.
Overall this well crafted show accomplishes the hard task to combine 2 very different genres into one show that fans of either genre would enjoy. For the excellent combination of the 2 genres and my enjoyment of the show I give this a Good Good rating.
