Be Reel - Dodgeball

In the movie "Dodgeball A True Underdog Story," directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, a dodgeball team comprised of unathletic nerds attempt to win a dodgeball tournament and claim the cash prize. These nerds name their team the Average Joe's, led by Peter LeFleur (Vince Vaughn) and they become rivals with the best dodgeball team in the tournament, the Purple Cobras from Globo Gym. They are led by White Goodman (Ben Stiller) and are portrayed as the best and almost impossible to beat. LeFleur has to win the money because his mortgage needs to be paid in 30 days so he needs the money. The Purple Cobras are looking to take that money from them to help their gym. Throughout the movie, LeFleur and Goodman are seen battling back and forth over girls and other stupid things. Peter LeFleur usually wins those mini battles which foreshadows what could happen later in the film. (Although you never know how it will end because it's a comedy). In the end, LeFleur and Goodman's teams do meet int he championship and all is decided from there. Will LeFleur win the money and pay off his mortgage, or will Goodman win the cash and rub it in LeFleur's face that he couldn't win?

Objectively, this is a well made film. From the beginning we are given the back story of both White Goodman and his Globo Gym and the scenario Peter LeFleur is in. We learn about our character's pasts which helps us as audience members understand the plot and the characters better. The movie also used certain elements of mise en scene well. Depending on the scene the lighting key was adjusted accordingly, such as when White Goodman is trying to get romantic with Kate. In these scenes the lighting is dimmed making the scene more romantic even though we know nothing that's about to happen is romantic. (If you want relationship advice, don't ask White Goodman). The film also uses diegetic audio well such as when Patches says "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball," and then proceeds to hit people in the head with wrenches. When the wrench it makes a noise that metal would make when hitting a hard object. Lastly, you can't forget the comedic part of the movie. Comedy is what makes this movie so good; even though it has a well developed story the comedic aspect just makes it so much better. Yes, comedy is subjective, not everybody will think this movie is funny but most will. I personally, think this is the funniest movie of all time and the best movie of all time and all of that is because of the comedic aspect the film has. Overall, this movie is funny with a good story line; what's not to like?!
