Get Out Day 2

Today, November 6th, 2018, we watched Get Out directed by Jordan Peele in 2017 and applied the cinematic lenses we learned about yesterday. A cinematic lens is a way to view texts and see the links from product to craft.
Cinematic Lenses:
  • Environmental Lens- links between product and environment
  • Social Lens- links between product and society
  • Political Lens- links between product and politics

The Social Lens
The Political Lens
  • Representation of Problems
    • Racism- arguing over what is racism
  • Fear of being black in this country
    • Police
  • Representation of Race

The two lenses the movie primarily focuses on is the societal and political lens. When applied to Get Out, the director critiques society through a black man being targeted and kidnapped, a high-handed policeman, and underhanded remarks from Rose’s brother.
The social lens deals how the product interacts with groups of people. The examples to follow as we watch Get Out are:
Societal:
  • Peoples relationships throughout the movie
  • Groups of people:
    • Community- Among which characters is there a sense of community?
    • Unity- In what situations are the characters united?
    • Division- What divides the characters?
Political:
  • The government’s decisions- What role does the government play in the film?
  • Rules and power- Is there a hierarchy?
In class, we analyzed the Sparta High School cafeteria with a social and political lens.
-Socially:
  • Brings people together
  • Friend groups, at each table
-Politically:
  • Older= more power
  • Divided by grade
    • 9th grade-> by the bathrooms
  • EAT ON THE FLOOR
  • Teachers to keep control
In class examples for the assignment:
Social: Chris asks Rose “Do your parents know I am black?”
Political: The cop asks Chris for his ID, even though he was not driving.
My personal examples:
Social:
  • The housekeeper and groundskeeper are black.
  • Chris’ friend says “Don’t go to a white girl’s parents house”.
  • The unknown man at the beginning says “Not Today.
The movie implies that there is a culture of people of color being scared for their lives, but diverges to a horror movie.
Political:

  • The housekeeper and groundskeeper are black.
  • The white dad says “I would have voted for Obama for a third term”
    • Example of Trump Era Racism
