Watching Get Out for the Half-Day

Today in class we watched some more of Get Out, a horror comedy directed by the infamous comedian Jordan Peele. Our class started on the scene where Chris is talking to the Walter, the yard worker. Chris is tries to first joke with Walter by saying, "They working you good out here, huh?" but soon realizes Walter is not like his other black friends. Walter talks to Chris in a very pitched, creepy voice asking about Rose and how she is such a great girl. At first, Chris thinks it just is Walter that is crazy, but as people come to arrive for the party, he realizes that Walter may not be the only one. As the party progresses, more of the elderly white couples ask about his race, commenting on stereotypes and "life as an African American". After a while of the semi-racist comments, he goes upstairs to his room, which is when the audience sees everyone in the party stop talking and listen to his footsteps move around upstairs. Once Chris is in his room, he sees his phone has been unplugged and has died. At that moment, Rose walks in asking where he had been. Chris tells Rose about his suspicion of the phone and the party and Rose blames Georgina, the housekeeper. Georgina later comes into the room, while Rose is gone, and apologizes through a creepy smile while tears stream down her face. Once Chris comes back to the party, he sees Andrew, another black man who he greeted before, and decides to snap a picture of him to send to his friend. However, the flash goes off and leads to Andrew shouting, "Get out", and pushes Chris from the party. Rose's parents get a hold of him and are able to revive him from his panic. However, this raises Chris's suspicion even more, and he tells Rose they need to leave and go home, which Rose reluctantly agrees to. The very last thing we saw was as Chris was packing his bag, a creepy small door was opened behind him.

After the movie is finished, we will have to synthesize political and social lenses found in both Get Out and Ready Player One. Make sure to read all of Level Two so that we will be able to start discussing this on Monday.
