Pacific Rim Uprising Was Not Upstanding

This past weekend, I watched the film Pacific Rim Uprising, by Steven S. DeKnight in 2018. The film is about the giant robots called yagers that were built to fight  The story takes place about 10 years after the first film of the series. The director of the new Pacific Rim movie had some good ideas and implemented them well into the film design-wise, but the film seemed more of an afterthought to the original. The director was original in writing this movie’s plot by not having the portal to the other dimension open again and have yet another war, but instead having the conflict come from there own world. However, there were many scenes in the film that pulled the viewers away from the good plot, such as the unrealistic movements of the robots and battle scenes, as well as the skills of the girl. In the first film, the fights were realistic; the bots would move slower and would require a lot more work to move it due to the robot to its enormous size. In the new film though, they had almost human movements, moving extremely fast and unrealistic to their size. Also in the battle scenes, the characters made poor decisions when fighting make the viewers annoyed and asking the question of: why did they do that? Yet another “head-scratcher ” was how Amara, one of the main characters of the film, who had trouble linking with anyone to pilot before, miraculously was able to pilot the yager with extreme skill on her first try.

The first of Pacific Rim film was one of my all-time favorites when it was released in 2013, and this new film continues to fuel my love for the series. I liked the new story and its continuation off of the first film. The plot twist in the middle of the film, where Newton was found to be infected by the aliens and is planning to destroy the world was shocking and saddening since he was a very beloved and comedic character in the film. The little yager that was built by the girl was a very neat addition to the film and made me wish I could be in the film to pilot it. The ending scene of this film is attempting to set up yet another film by adding Stacker saying “we’ll bring the battle to you,” which suggests that there will be another film to continue this story, this time taking place in the other dimension. This left me with suspense and anxious to see if and what the director will come up within the next film in this action-packed series.

(Bad, Good)
