Thematic Spectacles 11/4/18

Before getting into watching Get Out, we started to talk in class about the "lenses" the director and audience wears that lets them compare a text, to a specific topic. Essentially what this means is that you can take a film, and identify what topics that movie addresses, like what cinematic choices they use, or what political topics they address. What we've been mainly looking at in film is mise-en-scene, you know stuff like shot angles, character placement, lighting key, but aside from cinematic choices you could be looking for other things in a text. Aside from this quick introduction, the deadline for the second part of Ready Player One was assigned and is due on the thirteenth two weeks from now, and the second "Be Reel Blog" is due on Wednesday. For the rest of class we started to watch Get Out, and the reason why we started to learn about theses types of "lenses" is because Get Out shares its stance regarding many topics such as race, slavery, and, politics, and we should have the notion on how to identify these on our own. From what we saw these topics are address in the first twenty minutes, like when Chris asks Rose if his parents know he's black, or when Rose's dad mentions he knows what it looks like having all black servants. The fact that these characters are mentioning race and past slavery means that the director is intentionally address these topics and is voicing an opinion, and it's good to know what the director, Jordan Peele is trying to say. Whenever he mentions race, or slavery, it just helps use become better writers since we could implement this technique into our writing. Aside from that we should be watching Get Out well into the rest of the week.
