Michael's Night out-Halloween-Be Reel Blog

Synopsis:
Let me start off with this, I do not do scary movies. Yet there I was sitting in the AMC theatre waiting to see the movie Halloween. The movie is a remake to the older film where it circulates around one serial killer named Michael Myers. Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again. The film starts off with the notorious psychopath Michael Myers in maximum security prison getting interviewed by investigative journalist. Michael has not spoken one word since he had been in prison and so the journalist decided to persuade Michael with his mask to try and get him to talk. Michael is overseen by a obsessive Doctor who later takes on the personality of Michael Myers. To start all this madness, the inmates from the prison have to take a bus to be transferred to another jail. And as all horror movies go, something goes terribly wrong where the bus crashes and a bunch of criminals are let loose-including Michael. This is where the revenge of Michael Myers starts and goes on to kill every character that is introduced into this film. Meanwhile there is a crazy old lady who has been waiting for Michael to escape so she could murder him herself. She has been preparing her whole life for this one moment and has made her house a living trap. Throughout the film Michael continues to kill people with his immortal strength until he faces off with grandma at the end. Grandma, her daughter, and the granddaughter trap Michael in the basement where they proceed to light him on fire and roast him alive.

Objective:
The film Halloween use of Mise-en-scene helped create a more creepier tone throughout the scenes. For example, when Michael Myers finally puts his mask on and the camera uses an eye-level shot to capture the full mask and power it adds to his character. Throughout the film the audience never sees Michael Myers real face, only the masked one. This creates a mysterious tone. The film also uses Non-diegetic audio to add tension to some scenes. For instance, when Michael Myers in on the hunt there is one generic song that is played on the keyboard and has been present in several horror films. Audiences cannot see where the audio is coming from. The setting is in modern times with all the latest technology. Grandma has a secret basement hidden underneath her kitchen counter where she can open it or close electronically. The title itself is plain but it is s remake so it must stay as close to the original. The directors released this movie around Halloween, therefore naming the film Halloween matches the time/theme of the year.

Subjective:
Personally this wasn’t as scary as I anticipated. I thought there would be move jump scares and wouldn’t be as predictable. There was a limited amount of jump scares throughout the film. The only time I was caught by surprise was towards the end when Grandma was battling Michael in a dark house. It was also predictable because the audience would know who was being killed next. Turns out that about 80% of the people casted in this film was murdered. All were killed in a gruesome way. For example, Michael Myers actually smashed the doctors skull like squashing a pumpkin. Some of the scenes were unrealistic. Michael Myer had gotten hit by a car, shot, and stabbed. He still had managed to live. There were some humorous scenes where it involved a little boy. It’s the babysitting scene where he learns that Michael is in his home and he has to run away but drops some funny line along the way.

Rating:
I would have to rate this film bad, bad. The director did try to add some comedic relief by implementing the funny little boy. The audience never knows what happens to him and if he gets out okay. Also we see Michael Myers get lit on fire but we don’t actually see him drop dead. That man had survived getting hit by a car, there is a possibility that he could survive a fire. It was like in the film No Country for old men, it left me unsatisfied.
